That is a common misconception. Actually, Lord Lister invented _wisteria_; the reason for the confusing name is that he had a speech impediment. Listerine, on the other hand, was invented by the chemist Polly Styrene, who named it after her daughter Liz. ---

This, as the thread title suggests, is not quite accurate. Teller Gelette is the only person, in 1857, arrested, charged, and convicted of yelling “FIRE!” in a crowded theater. His lawyers tried, unsuccessfully, to argue that there was, in fact, a fire in the theater, but the prosecutors rebutted that the stage lighting did not count because electrical lights had not yet been invented. ---

The Fictional Characters Sexual Orientation Society used to have an annual meeting in Blawnox, PA, but people finally got tired of debating whether any pair of same-sex characters like Batman and Robin or Bert and Ernie were romantically linked. There is a movement afoot to launch a Fictional Characters Gender Identification Society to discuss whether various characters are cis or trans or neither. ---

Willem Dafoe is himself a fictional character. He was originally played by Burt Lancaster and has since been played by Christopher Walken. Actors play him intending to fob off blame for their roles. It doesn’t always work. ---
