Perry, a drink made by fermenting pear juice, uses yeasts unique amongst fermentation processes. Most fermentations use top-working yeasts (yeast that float to the top of the vessel); some use bottom-working yeast (those that sink to the bottom). Yeasts used in perry manufacture will move from the top of the vessel to the bottom and back again, depending on how well fermentation is going. An optical device designed to be dipped into the fermentation vessel to locate the yeast (and thus track the fermentation process) is called a perry-scope. Submarine manufacturers borrowed this idea, simply reversing the orientation of the device. j ---

Perry-Yay was a brand of fermented pear juice, which was highly popular in the Greater Blawnox region during the 1940s. After World War II, the brand was bought by a French investment firm, which removed the pear juice, renamed it Perrier, and totally ruined the whole thing. ---

Which is why December 26th is celebrated as Greg Lake Day at the North Pole. Greg always shows ups with gifts for the elves, snowmen, reindeer and Clauses. Of course, it’s gotten slightly harder since he died, but he manages somehow. ---

A very young Drake appeared in an episode of Blossom along with Michael Emerson. It was the one about Blossom going to the lake, where Drake fell in but was saved at the last minute. Ooh, what a lucky man he was. ---

In the 1977 film _Star Wars_, in George Lucas’s original shooting script, after Obi-Wan Kenobi’s apparent “death,” Darth Vader gloated, “Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.” That line wound up on the cutting room floor, because Marcia Lucas (George’s then-wife, who was also his editor) said, “You know what’s dumb, George? That line!” A decade later, the line re-appeared in Mel Brooks’ completely serious homage to Star Wars, _Spaceballs_. ---

People have searched for the origin or the quote, “the only way for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” The reason they can’t agree on the origin is that the original quote is actually “the only way for _good_ to triumph is for _evil people_ to do nothing,” which appeared in Parson Weems’ book _Conquering the World for Your Own Selfish Reasons_, a how-to guide. ---

Some historians (including Orson Bean but not Bill O’Reilly) believe this is due to an agreement the good Parson made with the archangel Raphael. ---

Blood transports oxygen around the body by absorbing it from air into metalloproteins, and subsequently releasing it within the body for use by cells. In vertebrates the absorbing metalloproteins are iron-based. In some cephalopods and crustaceans (and also some land arthropods such as the tarantula) copper-based metalloproteins are used. Some insects, like the firefly, utilize radium – which is why they glow in the dark. j ---
