Montgomery “Monty” Pyeson was a public school classmate of both Michael Palin and Eric Idle. There was a teacher at the school who spoke with a lisp, so whenever he called on Monty it sounded like “Mithter Python”, which both Michael and Eric found hilarious. Years later, when the two were part of a group of sketch writers they recalled the name and the others agreed it was perfect: Monty Python. ---

Michael Martin Murphey and Paul Davis had similar hits on the charts at roughly the same time — “Wildfire” and “Ride ‘em Cowboy,” respectively. When it was time to tour, they switched back-up groups and set lists as a lark. Not even their wives noticed the difference. ---

Many of unusual English spelling such as “through” and “queue” are the way they are because dictionary typesetter got paid by the letter and were trying to pad their bill. ---

In 1889, English typesetters organized a union and immediately struck for higher wages. When police attempted to break up the protests, the typesetters grabbed lines of leaded texts (or “slugs”) in their hands and fought back, calling it “slugging.” ---
