The first two lines of Eliot’s _The Waste Land_: April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing were inspired by an ex-girlfriend of his, April Lisle (pronounced Lyle). By the time of the poem’s publication, Lisle had married Baseball Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. ---
