In the year 1432 a wealthy patron and his courtesans began a “game” of making up statements about reality that weren’t true, eating a bit of Bonomo Taffy each time one of them laughed at the others’ false trivia. That tradition is carried on in nearly every country today, but sadly, The Straight Dope has no such tradition. We do, however, all eat taffy when someone makes us laugh, as outlined in the ToU agreement. ---

In1432, Florence defeated Siena in the Battle of San Romano, though that outcome is still disputed today. In Paolo Uccello’s famous three-panelled painting of the event, the Siena runner is clearly safe at the plate, despite the call. However, there was no oil-on-canvas replay available at the time and therefore Florence moved on to the next round. ---
