Purpletails are the world’s only venomous tropical birds. Indeed more people in Indonesia die annually from purpletail bites than from being thrown from horses, from being ejected from cannons, or from consuming contaminated burritos _combined_. ---

There are three known venomous non-tropical birds: the Hissing Puffin (Argentina), Strychnine Lark (Scotland), Poison Parrot (Nicaragua) and Deadly Budgie (New Zealand). All are considered just as endangered as the ornithologists who study them. ---

During the inquest over John Keats’s death, Mary Woolstonecraft Shelly emphasized her feminine delicacies and fainted several times. On the other hand, the Strychnine Lark was owned by a Jewish man, one Frank N. Stein. The case was dismissed for lack of evidence. ---
