>
> For anyone who doesn’t understand why I said I’d post my role if I was tied with JS and wasn’t sure whether I would if I was tied with amrussel I’ll try and be clearer. I think JS is scum therefore I absolutely think I should be saved over him. I’ think amrussel is town therefore his role if he has one could be way more useful than mine.
>
> As it is my role hasn’t become active yet which is probably unusual at this stage of a game considering the role I have. As I think our doctor’s managed to stay under the radar it’s likely it’ll stay inactive too. I suppose a benefit of me claiming is that I might be NKed first giving the current doctor an extra Night of protection.
>
> This should explain part of the reason I was inclined to believe MHaye too. I knew there was another protective role because mine wasn’t active yet.
>
> And yes, I’ve been acting a bit scummy (see the small catch at the end of my role pm). Not being around much (though most of that was genuine RL crap), being less thorough etc. It’s taken you guys long enough to bloody vote for me though. And while I’m here, apologies to zeriel for the smudge the other day, that one’s been on my concience a bit.

A part of me is really pleased that I did vote for you (if you’re telling the truth) 😉

I have to say the PM looks very real (but the fact that it took you so long to post it don’t look good at all).

So I’ll give you the benifite of the doubt right now and **Unvote Almost Human**

As requested by Special Ed here’s why I’m suspicious of JSexton. In proper detail this time.

Day 1 he rode Pleo’s arse and voted for him till macey made his slip. There’s a pretty good chance Pleo could’ve been lynched if that hadn’t happened. That Night Pleo’s NKd. Coincidence? Yes it could be.

But then Day 2 he’s riding hawk (yes I was too I know). Again hawk could well have been lynched that Day if not for peeker outing himself. Again hawk’s NKd that Night.

[QUOTE=J
Argh. If you doubt macey is scum, why vote for him? To teach him a lesson? That sort of vote loses games, and is a common tactic for scum to take to vote for town without taking responsibility for it.
[/QUOTE]

(snipped)

JS has voted for macey by this stage. But this looks like a way to get votes off him to me. As it happens he hadn’t read the Day carefully enough as Thing Fish never voted for macey.

> Hi folks. The flu took me out since Christmas eve. I’ve been sorta following along, but not with my best brain engaged. I need to start a fresh read from towards the end of day one, but at a glance, finding two scum early is gold. Not just because hitting scum is good, but because it gives us more solid info to work with on re-read. I’d strongly suggest that everyone take the time to go back over posts that interact with macey and bufftabby…and those that notably fail to interact when they should.

Sounds nice and townie doesn’t it? Yes, getting rid of two scum helps us in terms of numbers but in terms of information? Well no it doesn’t at all. Those two died before they had a chance to implicate or interact with anyone. In fact macey’s death was more a net benefit to the scum IMO as his posting style would be a definite liability in a game this analytical.

> Strawman. I expect scum to try and blend in and act townie. If that means posting an legit attack on their own, then yeah, that’s the right play. Macey made a series of terrible posts. Good town play is to attack them, therefore good scum play is to attack them.
>
> Hawkeye, I have problems with a lot of your posts. Some are big on general theory, but not directly related to the game. Those that do relate to the game, I feel, are pushing us in the wrong direction. Difference in playstyle again? Maybe. But I have to call it like I see it, and I don’t see you acting in our interest. vote hawkeyeop

(snipped)

“Good scum play is to attack them”. I agree and I think that’s exactly what you did with macey. And as I’ve already said, if peeker hadn’t outed himself I think you’d have convinced us to lynch hawk that Day - you certainly convinced me.

>
> I just deleted a long reply to you, Hawkeye. I think, again, that we’re coming down to a difference in playstyle. I tend to think my way has more merit (but doesn’t everyone?) because you get to analyze as you go instead of waiting for solid results, but hey, it helps to have people looking at the same elephant from different angles.
>
> unvote hawkeyeop. This isn’t to say that I consider you town all of a sudden, but the main reason I was after you was because I felt your motivation for your actions was scummy. I can see a townie motive now, and that’s enough.
>
> Maybe outside the game we debate theory some more, hey?

You used the same reasons for unvoting Pleo too. It’s a good excuse to use when unvoting if someone else is about to be lynched and makes sure your vote isn’t left on a town player.

>
> K, I just caught up with the last 36 hours of posting. Pedescribe, Total Lost, Hawkeyeop…you guys have got to be kidding me. You seriously want to lynch Cookies over a typo in her role PM? Really?
>
> Kudos to amrussell and Natlaw for actually analyzing Cookies posts. There’s some meat there, but I’m generally reading Cookies as consistent with her pro-town play. Given that storyteller actually wrote “total lost” in [vote counts](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=10644624&postcount=57), I’m amazed that this is still even on the table.
>
> I’d really like to think that scum were behind the Cookies push, but given that it was largely created by dead town and a mason, not so much. The one person I’m wondering about is Total Lost herself. The way I see it, Cookies tidbit of info isn’t conclusive, in that we don’t know that the scum are comprised solely of deadites. No reason there couldn’t be a traitorous human or werewolf or what have you amongst the scum. We also seem to still have another PFK floating around, and after seeing the Predator, **well, it could be Freddy Krueger for all we know**.
>
> So here’s what I’m thinking. After seeing Cookies PM, Total Lost thinks “Hey, if Cookies shows up dead, then I’m confirmed non-deadite, which basically = town!”, which is a pretty good position for a PFK or mafioso to be in. I’d like to do a little review of Total Lost and see what might turn up.

(bolding mine)

This smacks of PIS. Yes, you implicate Total as Freddy Krueger rather than BLAM but the seed is sown. I think you know very well there’s a Freddy Krueger PFK about and you’re preparing the groundwork for it.

(snipped)

Again with the PIS. Of course you’d have all the information you needed from the mafia investigator MHaye.

You’re not letting that one go are you? This sounds so reasonable but it’s subtly smudging TL. You say you’re not especially worried about her but still, she could be scum, oh, and it’s weird she disappeared.

> How do you figure that? I don’t think claiming SK is ever a good way to avoid a lynch. When it comes right down to it, his WC isn’t ours, and there’s no way we could trust him for long. If we’re going to have to lynch him eventually (despite him not technically being a deadite, I think we’d need to) then I’d rather do it now and prevent him from messing with us.
>
> Are you saying that you’d have been okay with him claiming “Freddy Krueger, SK, but totally with you guys!”?

Personally I disagree with this statement but I know some confirmed town agree so a null tell.

> [@Mafia: Evil Dead - DAY/NIGHT FIVE](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/mafia-evil-dead-day-night-five/480855/67):
>
> This illustrates the main problem I have with MHaye. Most of his time is spent apologizing for not being here and promising more content. This can be a giant scum tell for a lot of people, especially those who are often known as analysts. But, and this is a big but, I gather from several comments that this is in line with normal MHaye posting. Which makes is convenient, but a null tell.
> Though a scum MHaye has little reason to be cautious, yeah? Either he gets on a popular bandwagon on a power role, or he helps lynch a PFK. Neither of those are bad for scum MHaye, really.
> It’s not a case that compels me to immediately vote. However, I have virtually no notes on MHaye, which is worrisome. He’s been lurking in plain sight, and even if that’s just how he plays, I’d like to see that change. I’ve got a better target today, I feel, but I’m not interested in seeing MHaye skate to endgame. I want to see him pick it up and get less wishy-washy. Note that doing so doesn’t make him town; it gives us what we need make a proper judgement.
>
> I don’t FOS in general, but if I did that’s where it would be.

The wording of this strikes me. You word your response as a general agreement of townie pede yet you manage to explain away enough of MHaye’s actions to make him seem a less viable target.

You also say you have a better target today but never go on to say more. Who was that target because your vote at the end of the Day doesn’t indicate you had one:

> [@Mafia: Evil Dead - DAY/NIGHT FIVE](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/mafia-evil-dead-day-night-five/480855/171):
>
> MHaye is off the table for me for today, until we can test him out and comb through his claim properly.
> I still read brewha as town, as outlined before.
> amrussell is my first choice for lynch, but no one is feeling that.
>
> So, I have to vote Hal. I’m not wholly convinced, but of those with a shot to be lynched, I think he’s the best choice.

Doesn’t sound as though Hal was your original target so who was? I think you simply wanted MHaye to get an extra investigation in and made sure that happened.

> [@Mafia: Evil Dead - DAY/NIGHT FIVE](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/mafia-evil-dead-day-night-five/480855/264):
>
> No, just toNight. I’ve been fleshing out the timeline of the game, trying to see if MHaye’s claimed actions makes sense to me, magic bag or no.
>
> So far, not so much. My instincts as doc are to play conservatively, and protect the best target, instead of trying to get cute and outthink an unknown group of players. I realize that my way is not always someone else’s way, but I’m having a hard time reconciling not protecting NAF.

So his investigation’s complete now and you can go after him. It’s a bit of a U-turn. It’s also convenient our doc didn’t protect NAF.

> [@Mafia: Evil Dead - DAY/NIGHT SIX](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/mafia-evil-dead-day-night-six/481695/22):
>
> So you are basically a super-doc. I mean, yeah, you have limited charges, in theory. In practice, though, it’s about 50/50 whether a doc in any given game actually has a successful protection. Two is very rare. More than two is almost unheard of. So the first ability is more or less a full doc.
>
> Add to that the automatic self-protection, and that’s a very, very powerful role. Those two components are worth 6 points. The second shell is just gravy, although let’s note that it the self-protection makes it more likely to come into play. Call it 6.5 points on my scale.
>
> So there’s two conclusions I can draw here. The first is that I would not expect there to be a normal doc plus your role in this game. Too much protection. We think pedescribe was protected n1 from Blam, but we only have his word on that, and I don’t know how much credence I really give that. There’s other possibilities, like the masons have a collective one-shot immunity, or Blaster was roleblocked, or something. On the flip side, if you’re lying, then we most probably HAVE a full doc role in the game. I’m not really looking for a doc to counter claim here, but if one did, that would seal the deal that one of you would be lying. The fact that you have not been counterclaimed lends some credence to you being truthful, though, simply because I’d kind of expect a true doc to have already countered.
>
> Conclusion #2: In the absence of a counter claim, we can test you pretty easily. Since you auto-protect, it’s simple enough to have a vig take a shot at you. This has the bonus that in the event of you being truthful, you get powered up to the second shell. Of course, this assumes that we have a vig. If a vig claims today, great. They shoot at you tonight, and we find out in the morning if you’re dead, or being at least somewhat truthful. This should work even if the mafia try to take out the vig, assuming that everything gets processed more or less simultaneously. And, of course, MHaye can protect the vig as well as himself, making it a very dicey proposition to try and interfere. Or a vig could choose to remain silent today, and decide on their own whether to test MHaye tonight. With the scum roleblocker dead, I don’t know what they’d have left to mess with the plan, but sometimes better safe than sorry.
>
> Short version: I have doubts about MHaye’s veracity, but we’ve got at least two ways to find out without lynching him. And if he’s on our side, then it’s an insanely good weapon for us.

But what’s the harm in putting forward an argument for keeping him an extra Day? Also this fishing for information seems scummy. There might be a roleblocker, the masons may have a one shot immunity, you’re not asking for a doc to counterclaim but if they did it’d be just peachy. You finish up saying you’re not sure if MHaye’s being truthful but we could always wait an extra Day to find out - covering yourself from both angles.

>
> Very nice. Happy with the result, not happy about being fooled.
> Didn’t see a reason to claim, as it appeared MHaye was doomed. As for voting, I’m at a loss. I didn’t like any of the leading bandwagons, and I’ve convinced myself that my main suspect is town.

But you didn’t mind voting for Hal the previous Day.

> I’m exhausted, and most of this Day has been really busy for me, and I may not get back to the boards before Dusk, or else I’d post more on why I’m sticking with **amrussell**. My short answer is to repeat something that someone else said–it seems he’s not really hunting for scum vs. town but rather trying to paint pretty much everyone as scum.

When you’re looking at someone, the null hypothesis is, “This person is scum”. Then you try to falsify that, or get them to falsify that. If you go in assuming that they’re town and hoping for some clear and unambiguous proof of their being scum, most scum will skate. So yes, I am trying to paint pretty much everyone as scum, and watching to see how well that looks on them. Anything else is asking to get played.

> [@](#):
>
> As for my accusation that he “outed” **Hockey Monkey** , well, I don’t think outing a Mason is that far out of the question for scum. Why do it? It’s one more way to throw the town off guard. If I were scum and had a couple of good targets already, I’d consider voting for other known power roles just to make them claim. It’s a distraction, for one. It’s annoying at best to the player who wanted to stay hidden for a while longer. Plus, exposing her before killing her could mask the fact that the scum had an investigator. Maybe **MHaye** discovered **HM** , and **amrussell** , being below everyone’s radar at that point, decided to push **HM** a bit. Because, why not? He can always play it off as “confused townie.” Even if it wasn’t on purpose, though, it’s at best a null tell.

And what can be scummier than a null tell? You haven’t explained the advantage to scum of cutting down the suspect pool for a couple of Days, which is what outing a mason does. On Day One, it doesn’t matter. On Day Four (IIRC) with a lot of dead people and NAF having pulled his two for one confirmation, it doesn’t strike me as a remotely pro-scum move. If scum wanted to mask their investigator, they’d expose the Day before the Nightkill, not keep a mason alive as confirmed town for at least three days.

You’re reaching, and trying to paint what was not in fact a terrible outcome for town as a well-planned scum manoeuvre.

I reread it, but I am totally not following you here (flu theory seems to be **Thing Fish** investigated **Chucara** as scum). **Total Lost** makes a mention of her flu [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=10648825&postcount=117), but I don’t see how **JSexton** (no vote) and **Mhaye** (vote because confusing Alpha/Beta claim by Chucara) are connected.

About Almost Humans claim, well, it’s got film instead of movie, though the [trope](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheBooRadley) seems real 🆒.

Almost Humans votes:
D1: pedescribe, Millit the Frail
D2: Hawkeyeop (dead)
D3: Chucara (dead)
N3-N4: Hockey Monkey
D5-D7: JSexton

Not exactly a big pool (for example I think **pede** voted for almost everyone ;)), but now that you claimed that is easily fixable. It includes the two masons, but the votes were before they were known.
But since you’re not activated it not really useful. Looks like you even need to vote yourself before you can self protect?

I didn’t get the 'flu thing either and like I said before, I think pede’s trying to find reasons for being suspicious of me however tenuous. Just because he’s town doesn’t make him right.

Yes, my power’s totally useless right now and totally unconfirmable. The only advantage to my claiming is that it may prevent the lynch of a townsperson (me) toDay and the scum may choose to NK me toNight rather than guess at who the current doctor is.

As for my votes. I voted for who I thought was scum. Not much I can say about that really.

Not sure about the self protect thing - I haven’t asked story as my power isn’t active yet so I may not be able to.

But in case I survive longer than the doc and it does become active I’ll WiFOM the scum now by

**unvote JSexton**
**vote Almost Human**
**unvote Almost Human**
**vote Jexton**

As for the film/movie wording. That was picked up on in MHaye’s pm too. I’d be an idiot to repeat it in mine if I were making it up. Of course you may think I’m an idiot 🙂

Good find, but…why would the scum know who the serial killers are?

Huh. Yeah, that is pretty suspicious.

MHaye’s roleclaim was pretty convincing. I mean, it was a pretty powerful role, and he didn’t give us much time to think about it. I will grant, though, that it sounds like he’s fishing for information.

On the whole, I find him, now, moderately suspicious. Not as much as I find you suspicious, but enough that, if you die first, I’ll probably go after him.

On the subject of your role claim: I’m guessing your powers haven’t activated yet, because, if they did, you probably would have claimed and asked everyone to vote/unvote you. This means, right now, you’re claiming vanilla with potential. Whether I believe it or not…It seems reasonable. But it also could be a cover PM. I don’t know…I mean, you did makes some convincing arguments…and I don’t have any particular reason to defend JSexton…all right. I hope I don’t regret this…

I’m not changing my vote at this time, especially to the person my prime suspect is implicating. Jsexton and Almost Human may very well both be scum, with AH “giving” us Jsexton to make herself appear town. She could also be scum trying to get us to lynch a townie. I’m not buying her role PM.

I wonder if \*\*story \*\*gave all the Scum cover role PMs with the word film in them ;-D

The power seems remarkably similar to **MHaye** ’s claimed power actually, only without the kill on the second attempt part.

I’ve done a limited re-read, of yesterDay and toDay. I’m not able to sit at the computer for extended periods currently.

I wasn’t convinced by the case against **AH** , I’m not convinced by the case against \*\*JS \*\*either, but there are a couple of suspicious points there. Does he not check in on the weekends?

for the time being though, it seems our confirmishified town tend to be going toward \*\*JS \*\*with 4 for **JS** , 2 for \*\*amrussel \*\*, and 1 for **AH** , **Nanook** , \*\*Natlaw \*\*and **me**. (on preview, I see hockey moneky isn’t, and I also notice total only unvoted AH but didn’t vote JS. I’ll monitor this. I especially don’t want a last minute scum-induced voting chaos…though, maybe that’s what this is.

In a way that can’t possibly make my voting record look any better, but is the most pro-town thing I can do

I’m not sure I buy her PM either, but here’s a question: where are all the doctors? If we figure 5-6 scum and 2 serial killers, and the fact that we had 3 gimpy investigators, you figure that we ought to have at least two doctors working at the same time. Lots of people have claimed vanilla…figure there’s at least one roleblocker…wait a second…nope, I don’t believe it. I don’t believe you, AH, and here’s why: there’s got to be at least 2 active doctors, assuming that Storyteller had any plans for a mass claim that didn’t horrendously damage town, or that he wanted to compensate, even a little, for putting in 2 serial killers and a scum strongman. And if there are two doctors, then _your role is basically useless_, AH. See, doctors are the least likely power role to claim, as their claim only paints a target on themselves. So figure, assuming that they aren’t stupid, that each doctor should survive at least 4-5 days each. By the time they’re both dead, the game should be over, and the odds of you doing anything useful are near nil. In which case, _why didn’t you get a redshirt role_? Useless power roles that masquerade as useful are rare, and anti-town. So, at this point, I’m convinced you got a cover role. See, storyteller’s not stupid–the MHaye role was wicked powerful, too powerful–and yours is useless, too useless.

I hope that made sense to other people.

One possible answer is that at least one of them is dead:

We only found out about the speak to the dead power - we can’t rule out an unrevealed ability to protect.

That makes zero sense to me. You’re basically saying that my MHaye’s role was false because it was too powerful and mine’s false because it isn’t powerful enough. You think my role would never have been used because our doctor isn’t dead. Well, you know, seems like we’ve got a pretty good doctor this game because he/she’s managed to stay under the radar - and should continue to do so.

I’m not going to fight this because the one thing you’re right about is that right now my role is useless.

I’d rather see JSexton lynched than myself but I’d rather I was lynched over amrussel.

My death will at least make you look at my arguments against JSexton. Plus I think amrussel’s town and although I don’t know how useful his role or lack of one is I do know that mine isn’t that useful.

Ha, I read your reading it wrong, wrong too (did that make sense) so I didn’t clarify!

And thanks for the vote count, I thought amrussel and JS were tied but they’re not.

I don’t understand why you’re voting for amrussel when you think he’s town in this post:

>
> Very good. I was expecting something like this after my attack on you yesterday, but I didn’t expect it to be so thorough. Really, it’s very well put together. It’s wrong, of course, but the logic behind it is sound. I’m going to answer all of the above with one simple thing: I’ve consistently been attacked and lynched on this site because I come from a more aggressive mafia environment, even though I don’t think I’ve ever actually been scum here. I made a conscious decision this time to tone it down in a big way. I decided this before I got my role PM, in fact, I made mention of it in the signup thread.
>
> What you’re seeing is in fact evidence that I’m not playing like myself. You’re exactly right. But it’s not because I’m scum. It’s because playing like a pitbull simply doesn’t work here. All it does is force a mislynch on me.
>
> Now, getting back to what I said, I was expecting an attack from you, and I was expecting that attack to solidify my opinion that you were scum. I was holding off voting you in anticipation of it. Funny thing, though: it didn’t. It’s very well-researched, and the things it’s seeing aren’t manufactured attacks. They are things that a strong townie analyst would see. So, you’ve just made a huge jump from the scum column to the town column. I’m putting this out there in the event that I end up mislynched anyway, despite trying to avoid it, and I don’t want you to get backlash for it. I mean, if this is a scum performance, then bravo, you deserve the win. I don’t think it’s the case.

I’ve already said in previous posts but all he’s been accused of really is poo flinging. Throughout the game I’ve had a strong town vibe from him. Admittedly my track record for spotting scum hasn’t been good but there you go.

He was pulled up on finding one player potentially scummy for one action and another for the opposite action. He’s right though that different scum play in different ways and that one doesn’t exclude the other.

Meant to add to that the fact that poo flinging results in reactions which can be far more telling than the accusation itself.
