So incredibly irritated.

**vote: Hal Briston**

I didn’t find his explanation to Skeezix about the votes on the other four officers to be convincing. (He said roughly that he was under the impression that at least one of them must be scum according to the setup.) As well, he is Captain and essentially not contributing. That’s a whole different order of “anti-town” than the ordinary.

**Idle, if he survives and so do you, I believe that his removal would be a good use of your power.**

**vote: fubbleskag**

See Stanislaus’ [post 332](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=13606845&postcount=332) and add a big “me too”. Plus, if I had a quarter for every inexperienced scum who aplogizes in advance for anything, much less who also appeals to the struggle to find people to vote for, I’d have enough for a Value Meal.

There’s also, though it’s ridiculously speculative, this (from Pleo’s next vote count after fubbles’ votes):

> [@](#):
>
> Hal Briston (6) \<= peekercpa, Mahaloth, Inner Stickler, Red Skeezix, glowacks, Natlaw.
> Idle Thoughts (6) \<= peekercpa, Mahaloth, glowacks, Natlaw, fubbleskag, Stanislaus.
> peekercpa (5) \<= Hal Briston, fluiddruid, peekercpa, Mahaloth, fubbleskag.
> Drain Bead (5) \<= Inner Stickler, Red Skeezix, glowacks, Natlaw, fubbleskag.

Fubbleskag managing to vote for every vote leader BUT Hal Briston, given the context of my already wanting to vote Hal Briston, can’t help but draw the eye.

**vote: Normal Phase**

Place holder to fill out the list. I also have a vote on **Drain Bead** , but given her continued complete absence, feel it much less strongly than I did a couple of days ago and will move it if I find four solid votes and/or Drain Bead is in danger of being lynched over someone I consider a better suspect.

I’m going to look at the voters for peeker and Idle Thoughts (and Idle Thoughts himself). I’m not a fan of either bandwagon, most especially the one on peeker, which is no more than a mishmash of several different bad reasons. I’m already voting for Hal Briston and fubbleskag, but will ask to the others:

**Idle Thoughts, Mahaloth and fluiddruid** , how do you feel about your votes on peeker now? (Note if you’ve already commented since post 336 – the last vote count – just point me to where you did; I often miss posts when catching up like I’m doing here.)

The case against Idle Thoughts is considerably stronger. He placed several weak votes in part due to a claimed misunderstanding of the rules, then failed to remove the votes once corrected. He arguably claimed too early. What bothers me regardless is that to me, both those arguments have a slight whiff of “you didn’t do what townies are expected to do” to them, which is not quite the same thing as “you did something scummy”. Hence, (especially coupled with Idle’s recent genuine-seeming frustration), makes me uneasy it may be a case of “easy target”. I need to review most of the thread to be sure which way I want to go on it, though, which could take a while.

Finally, I also want to take a look at the case against fluiddruid (ref: Natlaw post 294). It seemed like some interesting things were being said around that portion of the thread, but it was going in one eye and out the back of my head the last time I tried to look at it.

I don’t agree with spacing **Hal Briston**. His moves don’t strike me as scum plays, not that I know why he’s choosing not to participate much. Making an early, largely flip vote and not defending/updating it doesn’t seem like scum behavior - I wish I knew what was going on with him, but it doesn’t seem to be scumminess to me. Further, the person who I would rate the scummiest (Natlaw) is also voting for him, which doesn’t encourage me.

I definitely do not like what it is going to do with our officers, in that everyone will move up a rank. For brevity, I’ve cut off the bottom of the list.

1. Hal Briston - Captain
2. fluiddruid - Executive Officer
3. TexCat - Chief of Security
4. peekercpa - Head of Engineering
5. Mahaloth - Ship’s Doctor
6. Inner Stickler

The biggest problem I see is that I probably trust peekercpa the least of all of these. I tend to agree with peeker not seeming to be his town play style. In addition, I don’t trust Natlaw’s late-day vote shift from peeker to Hal Briston, making him the new vote leader. I don’t like this at all. I fear that I’m going to end up a toothless captain with an uncooperative scum chief, which helps no-one.

On the bright side, a claimed Mate in the Doctor spot isn’t bad (though if the claim is true, which I believe it likely is, I fear it will be quite temporary). I don’t have any reason to fear TexCat as ExOp, and Mahaloth I’m still not sure of.

Based on all of the above, for now, I am going to:

**unvote Red Skeezix** , who I feel has adequately reassured me of his vote on Idle

and

**vote Drain Bead**. I really, really hate to do this, because I don’t think Drain Bead is necessarily scum, but I’d rather lynch an absent lurker at this point than mix around the officer spots (even if keeping another person who’s largely lurking). DB’s the first one on the vote list who doesn’t have a combined peeker/natlaw vote (Hal and Idle having both), and right now that’s good enough for me. As far as I am concerned, this seems to be the best play that’s town-friendly.

2. Wrong again. I removed the one vote due to misunderstanding (which was on RS).

In the interest of self-preservation I’m going to **Vote Hal Briston** and **Vote Drain Bead**.

I have already placed my votes for people I believe are scum. Between the remaining vote leaders, I can either make a choice of a good alternative or just allow Hal to be spaced needlessly, causing considerable disruption – as I described at some length. I’d like a better defense of your vote than taking five words from my post out of context, please. For the record if nothing else.

> [@Normal Phase](#):

> What does that mean that peeker is not his usual town play style?

Mostly a vibe, but (and I mean no offense by this) I usually find that peeker rattles a lot more cages as town. He tends to play very aggressively and I just don’t get that feeling from him. He feels restrained to me. In conjunction with his (at least in my perception) association with Natlaw, that’s as good a reason to feel doubt of him at this point as I can manage for anyone on Day 1.

I’ll have to take that at face value not having a good grasp of what peeks has been up to so far this game (other than the votes against him amount to rather a lot of nothing).

Hal’s spacing would have one presumed-good result, in that it would put Inner Stickler into the doc position for the evening. He is not my top suspect, though (fubbleskag is – anyone else want to give him a look?).

I went and found what I think is your original vote post, fluid, and I think it’s worth a vote:

> [@fluiddruid](#):
>
> I have to agree. I think a vote against a role claim needs to be adequately defended. Weakly hand-waving and saying “well, you could be a scum hacker” isn’t enough. Why do you think Idle is claiming if he’s scum? Why are we so quick to space someone for what is, essentially, a rules misunderstanding? That seems to be extremely scant evidence to space someone for, and I don’t see the purpose in spacing a claimed town power role on Day One just to space _somebody_.
>
> Sorry, I don’t buy this bandwagon one bit and the fact that the role claim hasn’t slowed the voting or even expanded discussion is greatly concerning to me. I don’t know who all in this group is scum and who is town, but this seems scum-backed to me, and at this point it’s the best reason I have to lay down some votes.
>
> vote Natlaw
>
> vote peekercpa
>
> vote Mahaloth
>
> vote Red Skeezix

First, you are making essentially the same possibly-scummy mistake that Hal Briston did, and for which I am currently voting him. You’ve taken a group of people that might contain scum and voting for all of them on that potentiality, rather than doing the more difficult task of finding who is scummy on an individual basis. A bad bandwagon is a fine starting point for scum hunting, but that’s all it is. What you’ve done is no more than a glorified version of the “FOS all of you” business that I’ve engaged in myself once or twice as scum, and for which I was rightly called out.

Second, you are too dismissive of the case against Idle Thoughts; or at least dismissive for the wrong reasons. Yes, a vote against a role claim should be adequately defended (or at least it should be explained why the role claim is arguably irrelevant to the issue, which I think is the case here). However:“why do you think Idle is claiming if scum”? Because he doesn’t want to get lynched, obviously! Nor does the case boil down to Idle having had a rules misunderstanding. For all of my issues, it’s a good deal more subtle than that.

In short, I think your rationale for these votes is suspicious, and could be more indicative of a desire to look good for going against a bad bandwagon (or perhaps, to defend a fellow scum) than of any real attempt at scumhunting. It doesn’t look like a real attempt at scumhunting, to me.

**unvote: Drain Bead**

Someone who’s completely absent should not be lynched “for lack of anything better to do” on a day with as many decent leads as this one.

**vote: fluiddruid**

Now currently tied with fubbleskag for my top suspect, almost to the point I’m willing to unvote Hal. I have to go pick up my son, though, and will see how things stand when I get back.

Why do you think a scummy peeker is better in the position of the engineer where he could report false result versus the chief position where he can’t do anything without a Captain’s order. Especially since you don’t think the Captain (Hal) scummy?

Yeah, I’ve since found a post referring back to your original vote rationales that makes that more clear. I don’t think it really helps your case, though. I personally am not fond of your reasons for voting most of your original candidates. (I keep harping on the peeker votes, but really? That’s scummy? How?) To the extent that the people voting for you might have been influenced by those weak votes (whether they said so or not), I’m not willing to call them out for voting poorly at this point, nor willing to say you don’t deserve the votes you’ve gotten.

Hey, I’ve already said they’re all weak votes. I’ll be the first to admit it. It’s Day one, after all…nobody had really JUMPED out at me being suspicious other than those who haven’t been around much.

Wow, I really don’t like that unilateral decision of “we’re not going to lynch Idle without wasting the Doctor investigation”!

Vote in order of suspicion are now

**Vote Mahaloth
Vote Fluiddruid
Vote Idle Thoughts
Vote Hal Briston**

Since Idle isn’t in the lead not unvoting but I think I rather have the investigation than his lynch but I don’t like Mahaloth forcing me that way.

My mistake you would be Captain yourself not Hal if gets lynched. But I think you trust yourself more than Hal.
