First, Chronos, good catch on the switches. I think I didn’t even finish reading that post, it was so interesting to get to the role doc.

I had written out a bunch of thoughts and questions on switches and suddenly realized it was like watching a monkey try to think. I’ll hold off on that for right now.

> [@Chronos](#):
>
> Watcher: People (Town and Scum alike) are most likely to be targeting those most likely to get Scum-killed. The catch is that in this game, the Scum factional kills aren’t considered actions, and won’t get seen. You might see a Doc-killer targeting someone, or you might see a Doctor doing so (or both). Since you can’t tell which is which, it’s probably best to wait until the claims start flying to reveal your results.
>
> \<snip\>
>
> Zoning inspector/Leprechaun: A lot less useful than the standard role-blocker, given that the Scum faction kills can’t be blocked. Your best bet is probably to target people who’ve claimed vanilla, since that way, you won’t be doing any harm if they’re telling the truth.
>
> \<snip\>
>
> Scum teams: I see three main asymmetries between the teams, all of which point to the Mafia being a slightly bigger threat than the Wolves. One, the game starts in Day, so they’ll always (barring protections) have either the same number of kills, or one more, than the Wolves. Two, their kills, being during the Day, don’t empower our multi-lynch ability.

I feel stupid for asking this, but do we know scum kills can’t be blocked or seen? I just looked at the roles doc and was trying (while allegedly trying to work) to read the rules but didn’t see this addressed directly. Are factional kills considered a passive power? (Maybe they usually are, though I feel like scum kills are usually visible to watcher-type powers. It’s been too long.)

Also, you seem to be thinking triggering the multi-lynch is something the mafia would not want to do, so they have an advantage over the wolves. I feel like multi-lynch is not necessarily good for Town at all because it might be incredibly hard to control and then you have a cascade of death. Do you feel like multi-lynch is pro-Town?

Literally no one has accused you of bullying. But if you wanna smudge me for calling you out for your bad judgement, you could at least smudge me by name. And ad hominem critiques are a little unnecessary, don’t you think?

currently, you are setting yourself to be able to ‘coast’ on the issues. so it is not really hypothetical.
And while we are at it do you currently have any thoughts on the current issues-votes- etc?

> Agree that it’s an easy vote, not necessarily a bad vote. And scum WOULD do that. In fact, there’s not much I wouldn’t put past a scum!Angel to do.

I’m gonna take one last stab at this, then I’ll go back to digging my eyes out with a spoon.

Observing that behavior is not typical scum behavior or does not advance the scum agenda is a valid argument. Simply repeating ‘scum would do that’ sound bites isn’t all that helpful. What would be helpful is to ascertain the likelihood any action or statement might have come from scum. Is a particular action likely to have been done by scum? Or less likely? Maybe it is something that is very hard for scum to do convincingly. Or the risks are too high for scum, but low for Town. This is all valid reasoning and pretty much all we have.

It is fine if you want to refute a scum wouldn’t do this argument as something equally likely from Town and Scum or more likely from Scum, but if that is the case, say so and explain why. Blanket statements like ‘scum will do anything’ are not helpful, and in my opinion are harmful.

As for AngeloftheNorth:
My read is that AngeloftheNorth didn’t read the rules and posted anyway, and this irks people for some reason.

Town Motivation: because it is true. In my experience, Town filter less. If she’s town and she knows it, why not post? It’s the truth isn’t it?

So the question is, would a scummy AngeloftheNorth also post this way? I think it is less likely, mainly in the sense that it fails to blend in. Presumably, everyone else read the rules, so being ‘not like the others’ isn’t something scum strive to do. It certainly isn’t a case of clever scum posting something that looks suspicious intentionally. If ScummyAngel posted that, I think it falls under the same Town motivation. It’s the truth.
No, that doesn’t make her Town. But we have to consider all pieces of evidence and _weight them appropriately_. I weight it very slightly town leaning.

Day 1: It’s a crapshoot. It’s a dart toss. Scum-hunting is just fine and dandy and works well further into the game, but D1 is a matter of luck and anybody’s guess. Since I’m taking for playing my usual game minus the fluff (which, apparently, is scummy) and being helpful (which, apparently, is uberfluffy) it’s time for me to go into my Lynch the Lurker mode, since that’s what I still do best. YMMV.

An initial eagerness to play. Didn’t read the rules carefully, or he’d know there’s only one wizard, and 4 masons.

So it sounds like Pleonast is talking about a Wolf trying to send a message to a Mafia, or vice versa. Is that right? It still seems very odd. With so many players it’s more likely that a different player would see the secret message than it’s intended recipient.

So unless an individual Townie wants to run a gambit on their own, there’s no way to discuss strategy without alerting Scum. You just need to take into consideration who will potentially respond to your ideas.
>
> As to your next paragraph, anyone who is scum would already know they have a means of communicating. They’d also know that trying to fool people into thinking they didn’t would be ridiculous because we all have access to the rules and the setup. Pleonast sounds more like a Townie who hasn’t read through the rules. This also sounds like an easy and lazy way to latch on to someone on your part.

Ah, a reason for not posting much today: vacation. Curious that 2 of the 1-vote posters both pick Lakai as a target.

For looking like he/she wants to join the fun, but then dropping the ball. “Reviews” the rules but misses simple points.

Now, for those of you who don’t like LtL as a D1 strategy, and who I haven’t bored to tears defending it:

I’ve been playing Mafia now for about 20 months, almost continuously, mostly over on the Giraffe boards. It’s a looser, friendlier game over there, and Fluff and Helpfulness aren’t treated with the derision they get here. Here is a more serious game. Here there is paranoia. And that’s fine, that’s Old School, and I expected it, which is why I curtailed a lot of my fluff and some of my helpfulness (which I do both as Town and Scum).

But I did discover that over there, LtL doesn’t work as well as having Meta-knowledge of players. Since most of the players repeat often, Meta comes in handy. This game has 30+ players I’ve never played with. Back to LtL.

In a game over at Giraffe (forgive me, I forget which one), I posted the results of my analysis of the effectiveness of LtL over all Mafia games played there in the previous year. The results? Dead average for any particular player, which is the same as guessing, BUT there was a 5-out-of-6 chance for the shallow end of the pool containing at least one Scum.

Given the huge number of players in this game, and given the small number of Scum on each team, it stands to reason to me that the 7 Mafia or the 7 Wolf players (who, AFAIK, don’t know whose on the other Scum team), will do well to keep as low a profile as possible. In nearly every game I’ve looked at the Scum strategy for the D1 lynch has been: “There’s no need to direct it, Town will lynch Town just fine and do the job for us.”

Which makes the 1-post voters the place to start, as far as I’m concerned.

I like scum hunting, and will get to it, once D1 has passed and we have votes and Night activities to consider. But for the moment, LYNCH THE LURKER!

When someone is posting silly excuses for why they don’t do X instead of just doing X, then I see it as an attempt to hide behind the excuse. Town has no reason to post just to post while hiding behind an excuse. _Scum does_.

Using this post because it’s making it easier for me to organize my thoughts, this is where I stand on everything right now:

I think the case on Colby is BS and I’m most suspicious of Guiri, ToeJam and Lakai among his voters. (I’m suspicious of Guiri out of paranoia- he’s killer scum.)

I think the case on Septimus is BS.

I don’t think Meeko is scum, and I’m not sure about Johnny Bravo.

I’m suspicious of JSGoddess and Zeriel, and HookerChemical, and I will probably move my vote to Lakai. (I don’t want a one-off vote that doesn’t count, and I want to see more of Drain Bead before condemning her.)

Thank you, Sachertorte, this is exactly what is going on, and I think it’s an important point for town to learn. Just because someone _could_ do anything, doesn’t mean it’s likely that they’re doing it. We need to discern the difference.

Dead average for any particular player, which is the same as guessing, BUT there was a 5-out-of-6 chance for the shallow end of the pool containing at least one Scum.

In nearly every game I’ve looked at the Scum strategy for the D1 lynch has been: “There’s no need to direct it, Town will lynch Town just fine and do the job for us.”

Prof, I love you but this is pinging every nerve on me. It sounds like scum Prof trying to act like town Prof.

It’s a silly excuse that I literally can’t find the rules? (I have actually read the roles post now.) Hal Briston handily posted links to them and while I’ve been posting from my phone trying to answer the new posts popping up, I can’t find it for the life of me.

TexCat, I want to answer your post too, but I only saw it in preview and can’t find it either. My response to you once again is that while I certainly would do absolutely anything as scum, there is literally no benefit to me doing this if I were scum.

I blame me too.

My understanding is that is by design.
The weird stuff happens when one switch operator dies. At least in the last Mahaloth switch game (which happened to be my last previous mafia game {I think}), who had what switch was public knowledge. I’m expecting switch possession to be revealed upon death, so when one switch dies, the other has complete control\* of the switch. That may or may not be the case here, but that is what I’m anticipating.

Really? You’re still suspicious of Colby? Do tell… why?
I have to admit, septimus’s posts make me want to vote for him. But to some extent that is the problem. septimus keeps posting.

You know who isn’t posting and is therefore ducking the heat? ToeJammy Roosh.

Yes. That was the post I was referring to.

I would like to point out that she’s right in the sense that admitting that she didn’t read the rules would be a very dumb move for scum, because she’s getting a lot of Lynch attention for it. And we know this because she’s getting a lot of Lynch attention for it. 😃

I can’t comment on her play style or compare to previous games.

Just for the record: I didn’t place a
“you’re being anti-town” vote.
My vote wasn’t placed on you for not reading the rules.
My vote was placed because when people asked you about it, you simply replied with a “yes it is anti-town. But would scum do that?”

In a mafiagame like this current game I think reading rules are actually as anti-scum as anti-town and anti-game. You not reading them is what it is.

Would scum do that? Maybe.
Would a 3.party knowing their own role from a PM do it? Why not?

But I voted for you trying to make it look like you were more likely to be town for doing it.

I would like you to note that I didn’t say this about your vote, or complain about your vote. It’s been a long time since I’ve played with you but your voting me for this is consistent with your town behavior. It’s be other two votes I’m objecting to as easy votes.

Tell you what, **sache** , I’ll up the ante a bit.

**unvote: hawkeyepoop
vote: AngeloftheNorth**

I don’t know who scum is. But I sure know that deliberately and admittedly doing something that is anti-Town, based on the reasoning that “Scum wouldn’t do that” is irritating as hell, and not something we need in this game. I don’t know a thing about how **Angel** normally plays, but I don’t see the need to keep around someone who admits she isn’t going to bother to keep up with the posted rules, much less all the other goings on in-game.
