> If the racism is very mild, I would agree with you. Kinda how like the Irish enjoy being the butt of booze jokes. But black people in America have endured four centuries of serious abuse from slavery to being uniformly called “thugs” and lazy by “Republicans”. When everyone of your race votes against Republicans (within the margin of error) and you don’t, you need a very special reason to pass muster in my book. Colin Powell, Clarance Thomas, Juan Williams, Thomas Sowell and company have career and prestige as tokens. That’s not a special reason, that is a sell out.

You’re still doing it.

Ironically, you’re using the same logic that racists use.

> Yeah–anyone who suggests that the Democratic party is mostly empty of racists is almost suspiciously sanguine about the state of racism in our country. It’s certainly seems true that people most affected by racism see it disproportionately among the Republican party establishment, and it’s certainly true that, despite some particularly absurd revisionism, the Republican party of the 1970s and 1980s made some conscious and obvious decisions to court the racist vote. But to suggest that racists confine themselves almost exclusively to the Republican party is ridiculous.
>
> When African Americans choose to vote so overwhelmingly for Democrats, it seems highly doubtful that they do so believing that Democrats are all nonracist. It seems much likelier that folks do so knowing that they’re choosing the lesser of two evils.

I’ve made this point before, but it’s worth repeating:

Thank you. If I make the point, I fear it is vulnerable to dismissal as grounded in a political point. The most valuable argument comes when you call out an error on your own side, and I appreciate seeing it.

No, it’s not. It’s in the same ballpark, and it’s certainly not the dumbest thing in the world to make that mistake, but it’s not what he was saying. I welcome **Septimus** to correct me, but that’s just not how I read it. He’s simply claiming that the _excessive_ antagonization of Obama is due to racism. See, there’s the difference here - “all criticism is because of racism” is different to “there’s more and more vitriolic criticism due to racism”. _Totally_ different. I’m not going to claim that what he said was correct (your critique of it is pretty much spot-on except for the part where you misrepresent what he said), but he simply didn’t say what **Shodan** or you think he said.

Bush was a bona-fide moron, who served as puppet for Cheney and Rove. (I tried to educate you once on how despicable Rove was, and how sad it was that his was the key input for Bush’s domestic agenda. Is Rove still your idol, or has your ignorance been fought on at least that?)

Do you admire GWB? Was he a man you would happily support for that high position? Do you admire Cheney and Rove? (Can you propose a single U.S. Administration as despicable and hypocritical as Bush-Cheney-Rove, with their trillion-dollar million-lives blunder in Iraq?)

Obama is a centrist who, as I stated in the excerpt quoted, pursued centrist policies similar to what any competent Democrat (or even Republican!) would have pursued.

That you adopt the ignorant _Bush : GOP :: Obama: Democrat_ as a basis for your gibberish shows just how pathetic your “thinking” has become.

Glad I’m not using the same illogic that racists use. I’m not someone who doesn’t claim not to be a racist. I know damn well that I have racist thoughts and that they are wrong and I try not to utter them or act on them. We would be better off without racism. In the meantime, the point being that social interaction and public policy should not be based on appeals to racism, people should be polite in public (private too!) and that the laws and opportunities are equally available. The Southern Strategy is a real thing and has been used since 1968 by the Republican Party. Ronald Reagan’s launching his dog whistle campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi was done for one reason. Paul Ryan’s dog whistling about “inner city” men is no different. This crap is going to pollute the public discourse until it is socially unacceptable within the Republican Party and that will happen when their internet fans defending it stop doing so.

As a white middle aged male who admittedly has racist thoughts, when I’m in a roomful of similar people, I hear direct racism, either as a joke or people thinking I must agree. Putting the reptilian portion of my mind aside, this shit is wrong. What Magellean, Strongarm and all are doing is racist. (I’m going to specifically except Bricker from this wide brush as his posts here are pretty thoughtful and not racist in my opinion.)

You are correct - there is a difference. What he said, very clearly and specifically, was the first.

He said that the only reason for any criticism that mentioned Obama by name was racism. That is not “in the same ballpark” - it is exactly what I said it was. He did not say there was “more and more” criticism based on racism - he said that racism was the only reason for any criticism that mentioned Obama by name.

No. Racist terms shouldn’t be used. “Tar-baby” is one of them. Finding good reasons to use the terms, such as ignorance, is not a good reason.

Defending the institution, which carefully avoids making any racist statements, when it is made up of members who dog whistle at every speech is accepting that the cover of the official statements helps cover the individuals. The Republican Party as a whole actively makes dog whistle appeals to racists on a daily basis. Saying that it isn’t written down in language as plain as my complaint is laudatory, or actual cover, doesn’t make it so.

I only found one cite from you in this thread, and it does not say that funding would go to health care for illegal immigrants. It says there is a small program that assists health centers that care for farm workers.

The stupid twist here is that someone expects health centers to check immigration papers – that’s just ridiculous! Hospitals don’t check immigration papers, nor should they. Next are you going to say that because a charitable loan went to a food bank, and the food bank doesn’t check immigration papers, then it amounts to funds towards illegal immigrants? This stuff is just laughable.

Joe Wilson was wrong, and so are you. Funding going to health centers and hospitals does not = funding for illegal immigrants. It’s ridiculous to claim that they are the same. Obama did not lie.

I think it’s terrible that we formulate policy to deny caring for people based on the geographic location of their birth and that others find it deplorable that there is any possible way that any public money be spent in any way, shape, or form on someone because of said birth location.

The people who are most likely to use such a term are the ones least likely to mean it in a racist way, so they often get a shocking surprise when they do, much like a toddler saying a curse word without knowing the meaning.

This sounds patronizing, and amusingly I feel it in reverse - if you insist on seeing a racist element to “tar baby” (or “niggardly”, for that matter), it is _you_ who are “innocent” of the original meaning of the term, i.e. uneducated.

I’ve no doubt racists have used “tar baby” when they obviously meant in a racist context, but when the context suggests “quagmire” (as the term originally meant), I’m not inclined to knee-jerk a racist interpretation.

> [@](#):
>
> “Tar baby” was once a specific derisive term for a black person. That’s not something that someone made up right here and now based on the resemblance of tar to black skin, it’s something people actually said, widely, to refer to blacks in an insulting way in an earlier era. Since it is rarely used that way today, people have forgotten the racist use, but still remember the non-racist use, such as “quagmire.”

No, I don’t “people have forgotten” the racist use - more likely the racist use has joined or even taken precedence over the original use, to the point where some people know _only_ the racist use. I see it comparable to “decimate”. I know its original meaning (reduce by one-tenth), but when I use the term, I typically mean the latter-day definition (devastate, reduce to a small fraction) and have come to expect that’s what others mean when they say it, barring a specific context that suggests the original.

lance, are you bitter that people won’t stop saying ‘retard’ and that’s why you come into these topics defending the GOP (I’m sorry, the entire “GOP” being referenced by a specific poster at that moment) whenever someone rightly calls out their racism? You did this in another topic too, one where I broke down levels of how racist an organization had to be in order for me to personally feel justified in calling them racist, which you still objected to because you felt some shit or other about individuals should somehow outweigh the core direction of a whole political party for the last 30 years (oops, I meant “for the years specified in which we are referring to, which begins at or around but within 1 earth year of the November of election of Ronald Reagan”)

Everybody (every living human who has read at least 75% of the posts, and 90% of the content of each post, within this thread who is NOT you and not magellan, who is probably being purposefully deceitful in his ignorance or is a dangerously unmonitored self-damaging retard that needs to be monitored) knows what we’re talking about except you. The problem isn’t everyone else, its you

For the record, magellan is racist and he’s pretty much the model of the typical GOP voter/elected official these days. He either knows that and is happy about it, or is too stupid to understand that

> The really odd thing is that if you look at the unemployment rate among Blacks, you would think that the party that is supposedly looking out for them would want to help them. But more liberal immigration policies just mean that lower-skilled workers (which make up a disproportionate percent of Blacks) will have a harder time of it. How the Dems have been able to pull this off is truly astonishing. Talk about opting against your own self interest! Charter schools is another important issue. You’d think the Dems would be championing them, but they’re not. The Reps are. The Mayor of NYC is getting a lot of blowback for having taking a stance that is largely anti-Charter. And that is coming predominantly from the Black community.
>
> As far as your points about Hispanics, you make good ones. And I think you’re right that many of the values that the Rep part espouses can be found thriving in the Hispanic community. I think the problem here is again the successful efforts of the Dems to demonize the Reps as being “anti-Brown people”. The immigration debate is often framed this way. But as time goes on and we see more instances of Reps championing Hispanic candidates (and Black ones) the Dems hold on them will loosen.

That was easy. Just because you thought you were smearing Dems, doesn’t mean you didn’t smear blacks as being stupid “brainwashing” and assume that some token appointments, such as Steele, are adequate cover.

The stuff that comes out of your keyboard is regularly racist. I had you on “ignore” for several years till you toned it down and in the past two months or so, it is right back up there. If you are not trying to be the epitome of a racist Republican, you are not succeeding, as the OP indicated.

Well, Shodan, it turns out you’re gonna “fund” illegal immigrants somehow, in the sense of spending money on them. You could spend money on tight and ongoing security to try to keep them out (heh, good luck with that), law enforcement to identify and arrest them, prison costs to detain and feed them, travel costs in deporting them, occasional medical costs when they go to a hospital after getting sick or injured (as happens to humans quite a bit)… I’d suggest a calculation of the benefit your country gets from having them show up and work cheaply and deciding if “discouragement” is even worth the hassle.

But you pointed out that blacks vote overwhelmingly Democratic, and that Dems try to keep them doing so by calling the GOP racist. That’s racist!

I mean, sure, blacks do vote overwhelmingly Democratic, and this thread has lots of examples of Dems calling the GOP racist, but still.

Anyway, we now know that anyone who criticizes Obama by name is necessarily acting out of racism. You have mentioned Obama by name while criticizing him. Do you deny it? Obviously, therefore, you must be racist. Have you ever referred to the “inner city” in connection with any social problem? Racist! Have you ever said anything that anyone with no regard for the truth could interpret as racist? Racist!

Or, more likely, have you ever won an argument with a liberal? Racist!

Regards,
Shodan
