Making arithmetic interesting to kids (just teaching for 4 days)

I’ve been a teacher for over 30 years. I’ve taught ages from 4-18, plus university level and autistic.

As others have said, the School must give you all the information you need:

  • how old is the kid
  • what level have they reached
  • do they speak English *
  • do they have learning difficulties
  • how long are your lessons
  • how many lessons are there
  • what materials are available
  • who do you contact in an emergency

*just an example of what might happen

Card games - addition war, multiplication war (stack a deck of cards in the middle, each player draws two cards, add or multiply, highest answer wins everyone’s cards, repeat, when the deck is out, player with the most cards wins). Subtraction war - subtract lowest card from highest, lowest difference wins the round.

xtramath.org - free, a bit dull, but each practice session is quick, plus it tracks your progress and moves you on when ready

multiplication.com - good games, free

Color by number pages - you can find them for many operations.

Cooking

Food as manipulatives - Cheerios, M and M’s, etc.
