And jumping the rails from [the previous thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=464140) we begin with **brujaja’s** description of a vegetable, technically a fruit, that’s used in salads. Despite it sounding suspiciously like “avocado” I believe the actual word is cucumber which is, of course, the 12th month of the year. ---

Yule be surprised to learn that December is actually a word that means gloomy or dismal; from a Latin root meaning “shade”. ---
