Yeah, i was feeling really sorry for the eel. It must have been terrified and disgusted.

“Terrified”, agree. “Disgusted”, not so sure. If this is the common Asian swamp eel Monopterus alba, which it appears to be, then it routinely eats all sorts of other marine animals as well as arthropods and detritus. Chowing down on some live mammal digestive tract is probably not much of a stretch.

I note with some concern, however, that these eels host a nematode that causes the parasitic disease gnathostomiasis in humans. Though it generally seems to be transmitted due to humans consuming undercooked eels, it seems likely that transmission could also result from eels (partially) consuming humans, so I hope the (human) survivor will get that checked out.

A couple days ago I went out for a fancy _prixe fixe_ dinner. The first course? Eel.

Not the first time I’ve eaten or enjoyed eel. Butt certainly the first time I did so while thinking of this thread, ass-eels, buttcarrots, and all you fine folks and your sordid senses of humor.

Gee thanks Cecil!

I had to think of this thread when I read this article in the New York Times:
[https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/09/science/eels-escape-fish-stomach.html?unlocked\_article\_code=1.Jk4.0ylK.c7qA3RylDZzf&smid=url-share](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/09/science/eels-escape-fish-stomach.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Jk4.0ylK.c7qA3RylDZzf&smid=url-share)
Did I mention that eels are though?
And the NYT gift links do not preview in Discourse, it seems, but the link works.

Well, it made it as far as the abdominal cavity, I’m guessing it would have shown itself out eventually.

Curiously enough, the following story just appeared in my email:

> # Watch eels escape from the stomachs of fish after being swallowed
>
> X-ray videos of Japanese eels swallowed whole by dark sleeper fish have revealed how the eels can make a daring escape from being digested
>
> By [Michael Le Page](https://www.newscientist.com/author/michael-le-page/)
>
> 9 September 2024
>
> Japanese eels try to wriggle back out of the stomachs of fish that have swallowed them whole – and now we know how they sometimes succeed.
>
> A few years ago, Yuha Hasegawa at Nagasaki University in Japan noticed that Japanese eels (_Anguilla japonica_) that had been swallowed by fish were somehow reappearing in tanks. Further investigation revealed that the eels were escaping through the gills of fish, with [28 out of 54 eels that had been observed being swallowed whole managing to escape](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2281462-young-eels-escape-from-the-mouths-of-fish-by-wriggling-out-the-gills/) – but exactly how they managed this feat was unclear.
> Now, Hasegawa and colleagues have managed to film the process by injecting eels with a contrast agent that makes them visible on X-rays. Of 32 eels that were filmed being swallowed whole by dark sleeper fish (_Odontobutis obscura_ ), 12 managed to go back up the gullet far enough to bend their tail around and get it out of a gill slit. Of these 12, nine escaped.

Yes, that is exactly the same story in the NYT I linked to two posts ago. Eels are becoming trendy, it seems. There is a lesson in this for everyone: do not eat eels when they are still alive.
Same goes for [octopus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1oByXmohhU&t=1s), btw.

Or if you do, at least chew them thoroughly so they will not still be alive as they proceed through your digestive tract.
