Inability to ice skate is a dealbreaker? Really?

> Worst jewelry commercial ever is the one where the woman and her man are in the courtyard full of birds. The man screams “I LOVE THIS WOMAN” at the top of his lungs, the birds all fly away, and the woman looks _completely humiliated._. But then he gives her a diamond, so all is good. She’s basically a total bitch until she gets a rock.

That one I don’t mind. They’re on a second honeymoon in Italy, he’s recreating where he proposed, and he flew her whole family over to be there. That actually IS a nice gift, and the ring is just extra.

No, that’s a different one. In this one, the guy screams “I LOVE THIS WOMAN!” and the woman is embarrassed and tries to shush him. Then he gives her the ring/necklace/gimcrack and she _whispers_ “i love this man”.

There IS one where the family is all there, but it’s not the one where he screams.

Isn’t that a different one (though in the same series)? The one with the family has them reading newspapers on some stairs, while the one where he starts shouting is set in St. Mark’s square IIRC.

I still disagree though. Who the hell wants their parents along on a second honeymoon? And why should extra traveling companions be such a great surprise anyway (assuming they don’t live across the world from you?) It’s just a weird series of commercials all around (and that I’ve spent way too much time thinking about, apparently).

I hate that jewelry commercial that makes me think I should buy something expensive that I don’t need. You know, the one where the woman becomes breathless with excitement…

You know. I was going to try to be coy. I really was. It’s just not worth it.
They’re commercials. They sell stuff. They hope you buy stuff. It’s really just that simple. Welcome to capitalism and enjoy your stay.
If you don’t like diamonds there’s not a goddamned thing they could do to convince you that it’s a cool gift. Which is fine. But these commercials really do work as evidenced by an entire multi-billion dollar multi-national industry that revolves around a lump of carbon that came into demand precisely because of the advertisements!
Every single one of these commercials is the same. Every single one. Guy goes to girl with diamond. Girl gets huge smile on her face. Guy and girl are in love even more than anyone thought humanly possible. There’s really nothing so different about the commercial linked to in the OP than all the other ones. Perhaps she should have complained about its complete lack of originality?

> Secondly, her intense look of adoration upon receiving the jewelry. Why? Because he gave you diamond jewelry? That’s a pretty crappy, cheap, messed up reason to be overcome with intense adoration. I expect that kind of look after he gives you a fantastic orgasm - or offers to let you bring your sick mother to your house to live - or you discover that you both read the same book a dozen times when you were 15.

> Schlubby hubby mocks them both under his breath in a weaselly tone: “He went to Jared”, and he’s clearly a giant assweed because he’s wasting his paycheck on food and a mortgage and car payments instead of buying diamonds for his bitchy wife. Nice message there.

Heh, I’d like to see a commercial where someone squeals – “He went to Jared!” And then the next girl smirks and says, “Oh yeah? Well _he_ went to Cartier!” 😛
And for once, **Stoid** , I actually agree with you: I’d much, MUCH rather have a gorgeous [vintage piece](http://www.vintagetextile.com/new_page_621.htm), than some plain little diamond studs. If you’re going to spend [that kind of money](http://www.vintagetextile.com/new_page_683.htm), spend it on something with [style](http://www.vintagetextile.com/new_page_548.htm).

God, my dad always buys my mom jewelry for Christmas but he usually goes to JC Penney’s.

1. The link in the OP doesn’t work anymore. If anyone else (like me) wanders in later, [here’s a working link](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgnWqJWUUr0). I had never seen this. Not sure if we don’t have Zales or I just don’t watch the wrong programs.
2. The commercial is, as diamond commercials go, only vaguely annoying, especially as compared to the Jared and Lightning (Kay’s?) commercials mentioned up thread.
3. Why was this thread in Cafe Society? I have trouble seeing any of these as art.
4. Ditto on what **singular1** said.

> This must be the worst nightmare come true for Jared. For Americans, the name Jared means a dude that lost weight eating Subway sandwiches. Jared means turkey sandwich, not fine jewelry. They should give up and change their name.

I couldn’t agree more with your next to last sentence, and, in their endless bleating of the jeweler’s name, I detect a heavy-handed attempt to muscle us into believing that it’s not true. The jewelry company is probably wishing they’d bumped him off when the Subway ads first came out.

I like Homer Simpson’s description: “… you’ve seen their ads, with that guy who used to be fat, but now he’s just ugly…”

Actually, maybe the jewelry company should _hire_ Jared to be the guy in the ads who buys his girlfriend diamonds? That would get across what most diamond ads are trying to convey, “If you give them expensive baubles, chicks don’t care what you look like.”

I howled the first time I saw this Family Guy episode. Diamonds are not a rare gem compared to other stones so the value is an artificial premium. I’d much rather buy/own a man-made diamond if for no other reason than to stick it to those who profit from then through monopoly and human misery.
