Makes sense. Your comment and your sig line make a nice combo.

Then again, if the more mellow amongst us were allowed to cull the jerks out of the herd with a bag limit of, say, 100lbs dressed weight per month, pretty soon we’d have a much nicer planet. I picked that number because it’s about right to feed a family of 4.Q: What’s for dinner tonight Mom?
A: Same as always. Jerky.\<rimshot\>. I’ll be here all week. Try the long pig; it’s great. 😃

It’s been 4 months and the city is still feeling the repercussions of this.

And of course, as my previous post shows, some victims are still recovering.

> Douglas Haig told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he had been contacted earlier by investigators in the case.
>
> Speaking at his suburban home in Mesa, Haig said he planned to hold a news conference later this week to answer questions about his name surfacing in the investigation.
>
> “I am the guy who sold ammunition to Stephen Paddock,” Haig said without disclosing any details. Police say Paddock was the gunman and killed himself as officers converged on him.

> Records show Haig owns Specialized Military Ammunition LLC. The company’s website says it sold tracer and incendiary ammunition but is now “closed indefinitely.”
>
> Haig said on “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday, that he sold more than 700 rounds of ammunition to Paddock, but had no connection to the man and had no idea what he was planning.
>
> “I couldn’t detect anything wrong with this guy,” he said of Paddock. “He told me exactly what he wanted. I handed him a box with the ammunition in it, and he paid me and he left.”
>
> Haig said Paddock told him he was going to put on a “light show” with the tracer ammunition he bought. The bullets leave a visible trail when fired.
>
> Haig said he wonders “What did I miss?” and “Why didn’t I pick this up?” in his interaction with Paddock.

> [@](#):
>
> The warrants show that investigators found 23 rifles and a handgun in Paddock’s 32nd-floor hotel suite and an adjoining room. Police also found five suitcases, five rifle cases, binoculars, a spotter scope, portable solar generator and 1,050 empty bullet casings.
>
> Police reported finding just $273 in cash in the room of the 64-year-old retired accountant who amassed a millionaire’s fortune, owned homes in Reno and Mesquite, Nevada, and earned casino perks wagering thousands of dollars on high-stakes video poker.

The LVRJ and the Sun will be combing over these records, as well as the AP and every other agency that got copies, so I expect more details over the next few days.

Hopefully there’ll be some good news about survivors in those stories, too.

**MGM Resorts Sues _Victims_ of Las Vegas Mass Shooting**

“MGM Resorts International has reportedly filed federal lawsuits against hundreds of victims of last year’s mass shooting in Las Vegas in an apparent bid to pre-empt any compensation claims. MGM, which owns the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino and the venue of the Route 91 Harvest music festival, has argued that any lawsuits holding the company liable for deaths or injuries during the Oct. 1 massacre “must be dismissed” because the company took reasonable precautions to prevent such mass violence.”

I agree with the action.

MGM did nothing wrong. Nor did the concert promoters. Its 100% the fault of the shooter. The only reason the hotel is being sued is because of $$$$. What could anyone have done different? Room searches? Bag searches? One moron lawyer on local tv blamed MGM comping gamblers. WTF?

This is obviously a tragedy but how is suing other victims of the tragedy justice?

Sure, but it’s the lawyers who are doing all the work. I’ve been a member of 4 class action lawsuits over spam faxes. I’ve averaged around $150 each time in exchange for signing a form. The lawyer got way more, but he’s the one that arranged the group and filed.

I would feel better about MGM’s legal move if they admitted their own interest instead of spinning it as something being done for the benefit of prospective plaintiffs. “What happened to you is truly awful, but we don’t believe we bear any responsibility, and we’re confident that a court of law will agree with us. We don’t yet know if MGM did anything wrong. Maybe they locked fire doors and people couldn’t get out. Maybe they had reason to know this guy was up to no good and ignored it. I agree, comping gamblers doesn’t seem like a valid basis to file a lawsuit.

I don’t know if MGM was negligent or not, but before a lawsuit if filed, the attorney represented the injured person has to have a good faith belief that they can establish a theory of negligence. They won’t just file a lawsuit saying “you owe us money because something bad happened at your hotel.” Then MGM can defend itself and the court system can figure it all out.

Except the MGM is trying to get a judge to say they have no liability without a trial taking place. Their argument is that the SAFETY Act absolves them of all liability because they hired a company with DHS certifications. I have a hard time believing a judge would rule in their favor with a blanket ruling at this point, but that is the argument they’re making.

I understand what their end goal is here; to **not** be deep pockets. But doesn’t this mean that the estates of the deceased/shooting victims need to hire lawyers even if they didn’t sue MGM? So now the crime victims need more out-of-pocket money to defend themselves??? 😕

That seems a misreading of what is happening. MGM isn’t suing anyone, they are asking for suits filed against them to be dismissed. I have no idea of the validity of that request - but all of the folks affected already have lawyers if they are suing.

Possibly the Daily Beast web-page has changed since you posted your quote.

The NYTimes has much better information [here](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/17/us/mgm-resorts-sues-victims.html):

> [@NYT](#):

> MGM is not suing for money, but the company wants a federal court to rule that it cannot be held liable for the shooting by more than 1,000 victims and others it named in the suits. The company said it named only people that have already sued or given notice that they intend to do so.

So it is a kind of suit that hasn’t been tried before in this kind of situation, but not for money. Does that bring down the RO level at all?
