I usually agree with **Manny** , although I think I’m a bit more of a libertarian than he is. It’s easy to be preceived as a Bush apologist if you challenge the numerous nitwit Bushwhackers\* around here often enough. I find myself explaining (not defending) Bush’s policies a lot because there are so many mischaracterizations and idiotic drive-by. \*The list in the OP is a good start, but there certainly are a few others, too. ---

Aw, gee, we won’t have as many posts saying “You libruls are so stoopid you can’t see Bush’s genius”. I go with “whiny bitch” myself. This board is _not_ hostile to conservative thought, it’s hostile to dishonesty and childishness of any stripe. Some participants are able to learn and grow and help others learn and grow, some refuse to. And **Hamlet**? It’s called “fighting ignorance”. It’s what the board is _for_. If you have issues with a post, it’s best to address them right in that thread, not take childish potshots at the posters - such as you’ve done in this utterly-unconstructive OP. ---

Jeez, what a friggin’ diva! _Resigned?_ What kind of self-important sack o’ crap _resigns_ from a message board? Why not just stop typing and quietly await the hordes begging your return? And if our Tighty Righty brethren feel oppressed by a board with a strong ethos of argument from proof, they should look to their own. They should ask themselves how it came to be! Conspiracy? Treachery? The conservative movement in America has permitted itself to be co-opted by theofacist God-goons, and have no one to blame but themselves, if Big Barry G. were amongst us, he would be tearing the Dobsons and Robertsons new assholes on a daily basis. If we are skewed to the left, pray, then, where is the center? There must be some demarcation, no? So where is it? The Right’s problem here and elsewhere is that they are, in fact, a minority. They have achieved the trappings and power of majority by aligning themselves with a very negative element in politics, and have permitted themselves the comforting delusion that this is not so. When they come face to face with the rude facts, they are compelled to find some rationale that will preserve their hard-won illusions. This board abound with smart-asses, why I love it. Argument from fact is the criteria, yippy skippy! Now, if you find yourself outnumbered in such a situation, ain’t that a bitch? It must be those lefty college professors. Must be that the _Reader_ is an underground paper. **Doggy Knees** must be holding Cecil’s Mom hostage. Or it could be simply that you are wrong. **Manny** was gently condescending when he thought he had the best of an argument, and bitterly insulting when he didn’t. By no stretch of the imagination could he be held to exemplify propriety and cordial discourse. Hewill be missed by me mostly for presenting such a target-rich environment, such vulnerable zeppelins of pretension. (I am reminded of a (possibly apocryphal) anecdote: “Wild Bill” Buckley wrote a book some years back, and sent a copy to his Betty Noyer “Norm!” Mailer. In the back, in the “references” section, next to “Mailer, Norman” he penned a little note: “Hi, Norman!”, on the presumption that this is the first place Mailer would turn. ) “Resign”. Sheeeesh! ---

Milliken’s initial experiment got the wrong answer. Subsequent experiments did not immediately correct his error… they reported observations a BIT off from Milliken. Bit by bit, the observations drifted down into the “correct” range. Why did this happen? Because when people got results that differed from Milliken’s, they scrupulously tested and rested. When they got results close to Milliken’s, they accepted them without much worry. Milliken’s error should have been immediately apparent; it wasn’t. So, too, here. When you spout nonsense, it’s not subjected to the same efforts of rigor and testing, because the nonsense meets with the approval of the reader. When I spout nonsense - and it DOESN’T meet with the approval of the reader - there is considerably more effort at attacking my data and my conclusions. ---

From the UK point of view, the Republicans are right-wing, with the fundamentalists on the extreme right. The Democrats are in the centre. We take extensive gun control and a National Health service for granted. Religion has no role in our political life. ---

I run a message board – vBulletin based, just like the SDMB – for urban planners. Urban planning is a profession whose practitioners collectively skew towards the left. My moderation team includes two outspoken conservatives.
