March of the Rantoneers (March mini-rants)

“Rutabaga” even sounds like the name of a demon from the Screwtape Letters.

oh a lot of people swear their edible but that’s not been my experience …

I’ve been given to understand that roasting them converts the bitter flavors to tasty and flavorfully sweet. I haven’t tried it myself though.

This.

Good god, how utterly terrifying. I am so sorry.

This dog is a giant liability for the shelter. He is in pain - mental pain. We can’t fix mentally ill animals with therapy and medication the way we can with humans, we can only be kind and give them a release from that pain. You know as well as anyone that a euthanasia is about as quick, painless and fear-free an end as any animal (or person, for that matter) is likely to get. The pain is all on the humans who care about him. But if they really care, they’ll do what’s right.

A dog that size with a hair-trigger attack mode is going to kill someone. You got very, very lucky.

I’m so sorry you’re hurt, and very glad it wasn’t worse.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s cheated on her in the past, using me for an excuse as to where he was.

Are you a teacher talking about in-school online work? If so, you can block those unwanted sites with the school firewall. Internet access in our district is tightly controlled by both user and device. Student Chromebooks have restrictions, and student users have restrictions that are all controlled through the Google Administrative Console. Above that, we have our firewall that screens out all kinds of unwanted access. We have the flexibility to add to the list or remove from the list. When teachers request access to a site that may be blocked, we review the request and investigate the site in order to determine if it is safe.

In Illinois, all data and online related matter is governed under the umbrella of SOPPA. All school districts are required by law to be compliant.

The end is nigh. I should start going around with a sign.

The end, that is, of Stouffer’s frozen entrees in Canada, which have been here as long as I can remember. I complained about it in the February mini-rants, I think. It’s not scheduled to be phased out until later in the year, but even now, the Stouffer’s section at the grocery has only a limited selection left, and there are large signs announcing a “Sale!”. They may as well say “Clearance sale” … {sob!}. My freezer is as full as I can pack it, and beyond that, the end is nigh.

In other sad news, President’s Choice seems to have stopped making their excellent microwaveable meat pies, like the beef, onion, and ale pie. Those were always great for a quick meal with any leftover mashed potatoes or some 5-minute shoestring fries, but no longer.

It’s almost as if they expect people to start cooking their own food again!

Just as bad, I’ve been informed that Diet Dr Pepper has ceased to be available in Canada. Instead, they’re going to push Pepper Zero, which tastes more like the regular soda.

I don’t like the Zero / Max sodas. I like the diet sodas. Why are they so intent on pushing products I don’t want? I’m going to feel ridiculous driving across the border to buy diet soda, but I’ll do it.

Seconded. This is why I’m afraid of dogs! Because I frankly don’t trust people not to have their dangerous dogs around me. People use such terrible judgement when their hearts are involved.

I’m glad you were not seriously injured @SurrenderDorothy . It’s time for that dog to go.

Honestly I couldn’t tell the difference between them for Dr Pepper. Diet Coke/Pepsi are dramatically different to me than their zero sugar versions, but Dr Pepper always advertised their diet soda as “the sweet one”.

This article says it uses a different sweetener:

But again, it’s the same to me. (I love Diet/Zero Sugar Dr Pepper, I’m literally drinking the cherry version as I type this.)

The Committee strikes again.

Ok. I’m pitting myself again.
For those who remember my ex( advice on my bf thread from Oct in IMHO), shortly after that, he had stopped calling me, just like that. I was over it, and even dated someone in Dec. Which dudn’t work out but, no biggie.
Ex had left a voicemail during christmas, while I was at new guys house. If I’d seen it ring, I would’ve picked up and told him off.
I started thinking about him( being stupid) again, and a week later he reached me at home.
I did go back to visit. Do not flame me, I can do that myself( stupid me).
Things were ok for a month. Then 2 weeks ago, when I visited, he’d say he was tired; I should go, didnt call for 5 days. Women can see the signs, I kept asking what was wrong.
He had a birthday, his brother said he was taking him for dinner, just them 2 and their dad, so I wasnt invited. Then I found out from ex, over a dozen of his friends were there. Yes, his brothers a jerk…
When we went to his clinic visit, he said one of the attendants asked Is that your mom? And he didnt answer.
Then, we missed the ride back, had to wait 3 more hours for it, when we got back, his toilet broke. He was stressed and demanded I roll him down the street in a downpour so he could smoke.
Finally I pressed the issue and he said he wasn’t happy( cause thats all that matters).
I’m still wondering how hes been at the nursing home 6 months and they’re still not taking his check.

There’s an absolute sociopath in my apartment complex who doesn’t clean up after their dog, which is apparently the size of a moose. This has been a problem in grassy areas where people don’t walk much. Until today. There’s a giant pile of dog poop in front of my building. :pouting_cat: Some people should not be allowed to live anywhere near other people. I think it would be completely fair for them to be banished to a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, where they would be the only people affected by the growing pile of giant dog turds.

I bought my phone a year ago. 50$ a month. Finally, someone tells me about the affordability connection program, which puts it down to 20.
I fill it out, am approved. Metro pc says ok. It will kick in next month. My internet suddenly slows way down. The phone app says I pay 45. The guy at the store says, I’ll fix it. He does. Suddenly its say I owe 79.66. I show him, he says, disregard it. I will owe 20, on the 10th. Tomorrow.
The woman at the store says, it says 79. The guy will be in tomorrow, so she leaves a note for him, thiugh I will be there when he comes in. He had better, we are getting a bit of snow tomorrow. I dont even Have 79 dollars.

Apparently, UPS is now getting their drivers from FedYecchs in my area. No, UPS, the driver did NOT actually make the delivery attempt he/she claimed to. Both my husband and I were home and awake all day (OK, I went out briefly for a supply run, but he was home). Not a hint of a delivery driver at our door at any point, and now I get to HOPEFULLY get the needed information to go retrieve the package they were paid to bring to my door.

It remains my position that they need to deliver it to our door, and they need to do so very soon.  that is what the sender paid UPS to do, that is what UPS paid one of its drivers to do.  It is not our responsibility to go anywhere to cover for the malfeasance of one of their employees.  UPS needs to make this right.

I’ve noticed that the guys in the Amazon trucks around here take pictures of the package by the door where they leave it.

They do that here, too (so do DoorDash and Instacart). Sometimes FedEcchs does, sometimes they don’t, or they do but it’s so tightly focused that you can’t tell WHERE in a 200+ unit complex it was taken (had that a few months ago, thankfully one of my neighbors remembered seeing the depicted stack of packages in totally the wrong part of the complex, in front of the closed leasing office that doesn’t accept deliveries for tenants anyway).

Minor ranting about numbnuttery at the National Weather Service:

Looking at the forecast for the upcoming week, I see cooler temps predicted. Nighttime lows are forecast for 31F for one day early next week, followed by a drop to 25 the following night. The night after that, a low of 22F is forecast, and at that point the NWS helpfully says “Widespread frost before 8am”. Uh, I’m pretty sure there will be widespread frost on those earlier nights. And people around here generally expect frost in mid-March, so there won’t be any tomato plants for folks to run out and cover.

Similar goofiness: looking up forecast for an area in the Cascades, and seeing a prediction for 17-28 inches of snow, followed by the NWS saying “the snow could be heavy at times”. Ya think?
