Mardi Gras

Sorry, Neut, but that honor goes to my hometown, Bogalusa, which this year (main parade’s on Saturday) will have somewhere around 70 floats, and the paper says it’s the second biggest, and the press doesn’t lie. Ever.

I wish I had a monkey.

Bogalusa? Never heard of it. Further investigation reveals it to be a town of 14,000, occupying a whopping 9.9 square miles.

You’re kidding me, right? I’m not sure how many floats Lafayette has, but somehow I’m guessing there won’t be 400,000 people in Bogalusa come Tuesday. Or Saturday rather. At least our Mardi Gras is on Mardi Gras!

And hey we got the Cajun factor, whereas you’re practically in Mississippi!

We have a nice Mardi Gras in Galveston (TX, if you don’t know). My mom used to take us down to watch the Kiddie Krewe, and afterwards my brother would figure out how to get up in the balconies where people were throwing beads.

This year we’re staying home and my mom is throwing a party. I love my mother’s parties. Crawfish, King Cake, spinach dip, and good music! Yay!

I would’ve gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids!

Last time I was at Mardi Gras I was watching the news. They had a story about what they said was a tradition in Metairie. The reporter said that children were not allowed outside, and if they were caught they would be “beaten” (all in good fun). The game was that the kids would run around playing hide-and-seek with the grown-ups, trying not to be caught.

That was the one and only time I’d heard about that. True? Any more information?

I wouldn’t want PurpleCrackwhore to think her efforts are unappreciated. So catch.

Hmmm. Wind must have caught that one.

Neut, there was actually a retraction of sorts in the paper today, well, all they did was explain that they went by parade size and not crowds, although the crowds are pretty respectable, with an estimated 90,000. Sorry for the mistake.

90,000 ain’t too bad for a town of 14,000. That’s six times the population, compared to four times the population for Lafayette (and four times the pop for N.O.) Not that it really matters, I guess.

Late breaking news, y’all. Word on the street is that they’ve given up arresting the topless in New Orleans! Apparently the jails were getting quite crowded.

Personally, I’m staying home this year. N.O. is only 2 hours away (well more like 3 1/2 during Mardi Gras) but I’m rather broke and the wife just started school, so the timing is all wrong. Maybe next year …
