According to [**Cosmic Variance** ,](http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/2009/12/10/niftiest-robots-of-2009-they-swim-fly-check-your-colon/?pid=98)one of the **Discover** blogs, a new robot sub was the third robot to visit the Mariana Trench. > [@](#): > > Researchers exploring the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean had to build a new breed of robotic submarine that could withstand dives of almost 7 miles—deeper than Mount Everest is high. Nereus, the fruit of their labor, was able to descend all the way to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the deepest crevice of the trench, becoming only the third robot to complete the journey. They don’t mention how long it stayed. But it might help **Washoe** fulfill his [dream](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=520975&highlight=mariana). The other robots in the list are pretty cool, too. The Nereus was #12 of 12 robots listed. Not sure how I feel about the swallowable robot that can check your colon. ---

Ha! In your face, humans!
