> Well cool. Would be nice if she’d do a few public service announcements to counteract her church’s campaign of intolerance. I mean, she doesn’t _have_ to, but I’d say the Osmond family is probably the most well-known group of Mormons. And if they tithe, then a significant amount of Osmond money helped pay for that campaign of intolerance.

Individual Mormons did, not the Mormon Church. See the correction at the bottom of [this article](http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122463078466356397.html) from _The Wall Street Journal_.

The bottom of that article (bolding mine):

> **Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contributed between 30% and 40% of the $25.5 million in donations** raised as of last week by supporters of a measure to ban gay marriage in California. This article about the measure incorrectly said the donations were from the church. In addition, a photo accompanying the article showed The Rev. Paul Tellstrom, pastor of the Irvine United Congregational Church in Irvine, Calif. The photo caption in an earlier version incorrectly identified the church as the Irvine United Congressional Church.

30-40% of donations from a group that comprises [less than 3% of the state](http://www.adherents.com/largecom/com_lds.html) (far less in most counties) is pretty impressive, and it’s also inconceivable that the church itself wasn’t instrumental in convincing them to donate. In fact some flat out said it was, including the[artistic director](http://www.kcra.com/news/17964159/detail.html)of the California Musical Theatre who resigned when his donations (understandably) caused controversy in a manner roughly equivocal to the regional director of Focus on the Family contributing to Human Rights Campaign. (Maybe he can get a job at the Osmond Brothers Dinner Theatre in Branson, or a job selling Amway where he doesn’t have to interact with “best friends” who he thinks are living in complete opposition to his moral beliefs.)

> IF that’s the suggestion, get real. The pro-gay side had waaaay more money and waaaay more celebrity power on its side to begin with.

Celebrity power, maybe. Money, no. Just plain no.

**Total Contributions re Proposition 8**

To oppose ban on same-sex marriage: $44,103,525

To support ban on same-sex marriage: $38,766,260

Both in-state and out-of-state contributions were higher to _oppose_ the ban.
