It appears from the box score that the game ended around 10:45PM. I’m sure they’ll figure out the timeline. And even if he were blatantly violating a team curfew and making other poor decisions, the penalty for that shouldn’t be death. It’s still tragic. ---

I don’t think anyone is even remotely thinking “he got what he asked for,” but let’s face it: getting on a powerboat at midnight, for pretty much any reason, is questionable behavior unless you’re going to motor somewhere pretty sedately. “Speed was a factor [in slamming into a jetty].” 'Nuf sed. ---

If you’re a mlb pitcher, don’t get on a boat in Florida. 23 years ago, two Cleveland Indians pitchers (Steve Olin and Tim Crews) were killed in a boating accident in Florida. Pitcher Bobby Ojeda was also on the boat, but survived with a serious scalp injury. Man, watching Don Mattingly in tears was tough. What a senseless tragedy. I don’t like sports in general and certainly not baseball. Don’t follow baseball. Never heard of Jose Fernandez. But I’ll tell ya, reading about his story, and how he escaped from Cuba, and what a promising young superstar he was, and what a great guy he seems to have been universally regarded as, this touches me. RIP, Jose. ☹ ---

They’ve now released the identities of the other two who died in the crash. CNN was reporting yesterday that Fernandez was not driving the boat. (Piloting? What _does_ one do?) I don’t know how CNN would know unless maybe one of the others was strapped into the driver’s seat.
