> Yesh, I suspect the reason they were challenged is because they made a big deal of being married. Most of the times its a trick question, the right answer is to look irritated and say “who carries their marriage license with them”. Cause, except for newlyweds (and often not even then), no one does. Carrying a copy is cause for suspicion.

I don’t understand your post. Who “made a big deal of being married”? Not my friends, that’s for sure. And I know, because on several occasions we checked into the same hotel at the same time, as we were all vacationing/attending conferences together.

I beg to differ with your comment that carrying a copy of one’s marriage license is cause for suspicion. Are you basing that comment on your personal experience living and traveling worldwide with a spouse through Islamic and/or developing countries?

My husband and I can easily produce our marriage certificate at all times. We live/travel in many countries, and don’t have the same last name. While we don’t generally need it, it’s no trouble to have it just in case. From time to time it has been helpful.

> It will also depend on the hotel: last year I spent a night at one in Germany which had separate buildings for women and men, no exceptions.

The famous capsule hotels in Japan operate the same way (either the entire place is single-gender, or it will be separated by floor), since there’s not a whole lot of privacy beyond a curtain over your sleeping pod.
