We didn’t have anything specific in our vows about the duration of the marriage, but in in private we vowed to each other that if the marriage was no longer fulfilling our needs, and we had made every reasonable effort to fix the issues, we wouldn’t stay together, miserable, 'til death do us part.

We wrote our own vows and made them pretty practical. I’ll see if I can find a copy.

How about: “I, John, take you, Marsha, – _as is_.” That would be nice.

In thinking back, though, I wouldn’t mind if my husband had added that line from the very formal Church of England ceremony: “With my body I thee worship.”

Ooooh.

In the ones I do, the vows go something like this (roughly translated from Japanese):

Do you…

In happy times,
In sad times,
In times of health,
In times of sickness,

To this person,
love,
honor,
comfort,
and help,

Do you sincerely pledge to devote yourself to the end of your life?

Kind of sexy. I like it. Should I ever manage to delude some poor soul into marrying me, I’ll keep it in mind.
