Sorry if this has been asked before - but my other-half wants to know the significance of these as alternate ways of taking your “$5 Milkshake” in the eyes of ‘Buddy Holly’ (not much of a waiter apparently)… Martin and Lewis will be Dean and Jerry I assume? Amos and Andy is lost on us UK folks tho (or at least me) and therefore we’re stuck… Any Milkshake experts out there? 🙂 TTFN JP ---

Martin and Lewis were white. Amos and Andy were black. ie do you want a vanilla or chocolate shake? Interestingly, Amos and Andy got its start on radio and all the parts were voiced by white actors. ---

“Amos and Andy” was a popular comedy series in the U.S., first on radio, and later on television. It revolved around the comical antics and misadventures of a group of African-American friends, including Amos, Andy, and the Kingfish. During the 1940s, when the show was on radio, the voices were all supplied by white comedians, who put on exaggerated “black” accents. When the show was adapted for television, however, all parts were played by actual black actors. Still, the racial stereotypes persisted. I’m 42, and most Americans my age or younger have never seen or heard the show. That’s because the portrayals of black Americans were widely regarded as crude, insulting and racist. Most modern television stations don’t want to risk offending black viewers, so they don’t broadcast old episodes of the series. Any TV station that tried to broadcast re-runs of “Amos and Andy” would probably be picketed by Jesse Jackson! ---
