Did y’all see Wednesday’s Penny Arcade?
Hehe…
I got a character drop in my first few hours of the full game. Can’t remember who, though.
Played it a bit; seems pretty fun. Daredevil jumps around nicely and hits people with sticks; what more can you ask?
I’ve played DCUO a fair bit. It’s a great deal of fun, but they scrweed up their design at a fundamental level. Once you hit max level, the game ceases to be, “explore and adventure inside the DC Universe” and turns into “grind, grind, grind some more and then do ripped-off WoW dungeons.” The game is good… but it’s also deeply unambitious.
I also don’t think the inability to play as DC characters is a problem; you interact with them a lot so you do end up feeling like a part of the world. It’s especially interesting on the villain side because you can fight against someone one minute and then getting a quest from them the next - it’s all biz, right?
But the game is definitely missing something. Remember that this game came out not that long before Guild Wars 2, which has much of the same fluid combat and interesting art direction, but also much more cooperative game mechanics. Guild Wars 2 encourages you to play together. DCUO fundamentally does not. GW2 brings players together as much as possible. DCUO breaks them apart. GW2 makes it’s easy and fund to group up and play together; DCUO makes it hard.
Honestly, if there was game more like W2, but with a superhero theme and ideally strong, extablished IP? You could write your own ticket.
That’s hilarious. Apparently you’re running a protection racket!
I will be playing this - once I get back from Origins.
Not being able to make my own custom character ala CoH or Champions is a huge turn off for me.
The entire game is going to be filled with the same 20 or so character models? No thanks.
Not much different than Diablo.
Not exactly. There are loot drops to upgrade your equipment and alternate costume sets are also available. I know the latter can be purchased, no idea if they drop as well. I think there are something like three to 5 possible costume variants per character at this time.
Also, you only see others in common areas like Avengers Tower and surface streets in Hell’s Kitchen. Most main storyline areas, and some side areas, are instanced.
Having played a bit more, the actual gameplay remains fun, but holy crap the loading screens!
