Authorities are now saying that Al-Shabab prepared for this massacre by renting a shop in the mall. This gave them a base of operations that enabled them to move in a huge amount of armament. ---

The terrorists, being young and healthy and able to force other people out of the way with their weapons, would have a much higher survival rate than the hostages.
