Maui or Oahu?

Well, let’s see.

Honolulu, Hilo (I forgot - I really liked the volcanoes too), Kona, Nawiliwili and Kahului. It was good as tropical paradises go but tropical paradises just aren’t my thing. Lahaina was right up my alley - harked back to the colonial days and there was even a museum to boot.

I, a Minnesotan, cannot understand how anyone can find anything at all to not like about Hawai’i. Anything. I bet even their garbage is nice.

It’s summer there all the time  .

Not.

Sometimes it rains

Seriously, though, people will find fault with everything. My mom has lived in Hawai’i for 11 years now, and claims to have hated every minute of it. She also hated the other 2 states she’s lived in, but only while she was living there.

Does anyone else leave a 6-pack for their garbage guy for X-mas? I don’t know what the correct etiquette is on The Mainland.

I was thinking of asking that same question here on the boards. I know our family has always left out soda and stuff for the guys who pick up our opala every Christmas, but I also figured it was a Hawaii-only tradition. Though imagine if everyone in, say, Chicago did it. They’d need a whole other truck just to carry it all! …which doesn’t sound too bad at all.
And she hates living here? Sheesh. I love living here overall.
Though I could do with stronger tradewinds right now. There’s like, none right now, so it’s gettin’ a wee bit stuffy.

One thing I did find annoying when I lived in Honolulu was the provincial attitude of some of the locals. But I suppose such an attitude is to be expected to a certain extent. On the mainland, people think nothing of jumping in their car and driving a couple of counties away or the to the next state. I knew some adults born on Oahu who had never left the island, not even to go to a neighboring island. All they had ever known was on that one island.

Tell me about it. I was there exactly two years ago today…and from my 10 day stay in Hawaii, it poured rain for 8 days! They were declaring some parts a disaster area!

My SO and I went to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We got some great advice from Dopers before we left.

However, we both found Maui deadly boring…yes, the rain didn’t help, but it was still a very, very, very slow paced island with over-priced, and lackluster choice of food.

We found Honolulu a far more interesting place to hang out - nice beaches, great choice of restaurants at much better prices and more things to do. Interesting night life and lots of options, even in bad weather.

We both would love to go back to Hawaii, but this time - maybe a one or two night stay on another island - otherwise, we will be quite happy to spend the entire time in Honolulu.

I realize this is a zombie, but did anyone else glance at this title and read it as “Maui or Ohio”?

NM … just saw it’s a zombie.

The answer to the question “Oahu or Maui” is, of course…
Kauai.

It’s whale-watching season out of Lahaina on Maui now too, isn’t it? October-March but most heavily in December and January, IIRC.

Sounds like Maui is what the OP is looking for, but you’ll have to rent a car. I’m a big fan of Honolulu – lived there for 2-1/2 years – but I’m a city kind of guy. Still, there are lots of rural areas on Oahu too. It’s not all Honolulu.

EDIT: Just caught on that this is a zombie … and that I already posted in it! D’oh! :smack:
