Lionel Ritchie is some sort of Uncle Tom who isn’t black enough to actually BE black, and because of that his daughter can’t consider herself the same as the parents she grew up with, which also apparently involves “ghetto cred” (even though such a thing in words or in concept has been an aspect of Nicole Ritchie’s self-identity at all), because there’s only one kind of “black experience” that an african-american can have, and it must involve the ghetto. Something I’ve always found so ironic that it’s morbidly funny among the really, really racist people I’ve known is that almost invariably their life stories go like this: “My parents were terrible. They had no money, they lived on welfare and food stamps, they abused substances, they were abusive, they didn’t give a fuck about their kids. Teachers didn’t give a shit about in school, other kids picked on me, the government and the courts and the social workers couldn’t care less. Every time I tried to get ahead I was knocked back down by a thousand different systems in place to keep the people with the money and the power as the people with the money and the power. You know who I hate? Niggers.” Displacement- more than just a pretty word. As for walking through black neighborhoods, I notice it’s not qualified. There’s a neighborhood about a mile from where I live that’s almost all black and where most people are professional (teachers, military, lawyers, etc.) and property values rise and on any given day you’ll see folks cutting flat lawns on $1000 riding mowers and firing up stainless steel grills like in every other professional neighborhood, but it never occurred that they wanted to cut me. However, I can think of black and white and racially mixed neighborhoods in the city that are extremely poor where crime is rampant and it’s dangerous to walk down the streets in daylight. I wonder if criminal behavior could be related more to poverty than race? Nah. Somebody asked for crime statistics- here are a few and there’s gazillions more at the links.
