McAfee, I've tolerated your lousy software for too long!

I am not a fan of Trend Micro. That’s what we have at work and every Wednesday noon it fires up and bogs my machine for 1 1/2 hours. Chug, chug, can’t hardly work.
It might be a piss poor setup, I wouldn’t put that past our Desktop vendor, but even as a developer, I have no rights to modify when it runs.

On the other hand, AVG on my machines at home, runs full scans once a day, on the laptops it has to run when the laptop opens for the first time. With anti-virus and anti-spyware running there is next to no noticeable difference in performance.

We use Avast. It is free, and we’ve had no problem with it at all.

Well on the recommendations of this thread I just loaded up AVG and purged my system of Norton and all its inherent evil ways, and the system boots up faster.

(It would appear, from my hours of watching the process manager, that Norton Live update barges its’ way to the head of the queue and hogs the processor in its’ attempts to update the virus definition. Alas other tasks, such as the wireless network functions, don’t get to start on account of live update desperately trying to connect to a non existent network connection. Fuckwits)

Anyway , add another count to the AVG fans, and for gods sake, do not try Norton, well do but only this is the only type of Norton that should be in your system.

This recommendation is brought to you by someone who takes advice about computer security issues from unknown people on a message board, any resemblance to informed or knowledgeable opinion is at best, wild chance.

There was a time when Norton was awesome. That time ended when Mr. Norton sold his company to Symantec, and it has been in a long, slow decline ever since. You can read my tale of woe here.
