Just got a text from my wife. She was looking at her receipt from Walmart this morning and the hot dogs were listed as meat bars. ---

Yes, but then I realized there are already bars known as Meat Markets. I avoid those places because I don’t like being treated by all those desperate horny women like I’m a piece of meat. ---

They had to change the name for legal reasons when they stopped making them out of dogs. ---

I wonder if it could possibly be [“Bar S,”](https://www.bar-s.com/) which is a brand of low-quality (IMHO) low-cost franks, bacon, sausages, and cold cuts. I see them mostly at Walmart, but I checked and found that they’re sold elsewhere too. ---

That’s probably it but “meat bars” is much funnier than “meat BarS.” My wife’s text just said “meat bars.” BarS is usually the cheapest. My wife has a habit of buying cheap hot dogs to feed the numerous stray, hungry cats in the neighborhood. Why is it that all the stray cats tend to congregate at our house? ---

As they are based in Phoenix I have memories of Bar-S products stretching back to my childhood some sixty years ago – not good ones. In a [taste test](https://www.mashed.com/227056/the-real-reason-you-should-avoid-these-1-hot-dogs/) of 13 dogs, they came in dead last, scoring 40 out of 100 points. > To give an idea how bad the Bar-S must have been, the number 12 pick got 30 more points, and was made out of pea and soy protein. ---

I remember veal sticks that my mom used to get. They weren’t anything like fishsticks. The veal sticks were ground veal with spices and some kind of crumb coating actually on a stick. I liked them when I was a kid. I haven’t seen them in decades. ---

I think there is a distinction between the small fish sticks (having a larger surface-to-volume ratio, they are more breading than fish) and the larger ones commonly labeled as “filets”, which are better. Van Kamps is a good brand, IIRC, but you have to get the larger ones (10 or 12 to the box) not the scrawny ones (30 or so to the box). You also have to cook them right. They don’t do well in a microwave, where they tend to come out soggy. ---
