And if you are dealing with a Spanish speaker you will also hear “marigüana” (/mah-rih-GWAH-nah/) and very possibly “maría”. I have heard (in Spanish) the herb in question being called “marihuana” (/mah-rih-WAH-nah/) and “marijuana” (/mah-rih-KHUAH-nah/), interchangeably. ---

As **JoseB** says, I think both are technically correct–but “marihuana” always has a slightly musty, [del]skunky,[/del] archaic aroma to me. I would expect the producers of _ **Reefer Madness** _ to declaim against the dangers of demon marihuana. ---

Marihuana is how Health Canada spells it on all correspondence. I have never seen that spelling before, although I know it’s been around a long time.
