I guess I’d say The Messenger about Joan of Arc. It’s not that great but there’s some good sword and stormin’ the castle stuff in the first half. How about Kurosawa’s Ran? How about Heston in **El Sid[/b}?
There’s several versions of Richard III. Just don’t get the Ian McKellan version which is done in a quasi-1930’s England that never was.
There’s also the 1st season of BlackAdder. Some cosutming there is better than a lot of movies.
The Messenger is pretty good ont he whole. The actress playing the part doesn’t quite cut it though.
The Richard Lester versions starring Micheal York, Oliver Reed, and Charlton Heston. Done in the middle 70’s. They are better than any version ever made. Period.
There is also a sequal that is just as good, the Four Musketeers.
Oh, but it’s a terrific movie! Doesn’t fit the qualifications set by the OP, of course, but I recommend it on general principles (not necessarily for beer and pizza). McKellen is brilliant in it…
The Lion In Winter is good.
