That’s idiotic to the extreme. They are all roads, as well, and while one is West, the others aren’t East. What do the locals refer to these roads as when they need to differentiate them? Or is there really no reason to point anyone out that way (i.e., nothing but undeveloped land)?
The real beauty is that the map I linked to has the arrow pointing at an intersection that sorta kinda makes sense, but if you look up and to the left a little, you’ll see two roads branching off in a narrow V, both of which are also Bluff Lake Roads. That’s where the sign is (and I swear next time I am up that way I’ll take a photo).

It its defense, though, you’re right that it’s mostly undeveloped land. Bluff Lake Road goes all the way around Bluff Lake, with a spur (also called Bluff Lake Road) that connects it to the local route. There are some private homes around the lake but the rest is state forest.

Fair enough, but then why the need for signage? I know…you’ve come to the same conclusion, haven’t you?

Very good! And [a plaque](http://sidneywilliams.blogspot.com/2006/09/where-bush-street-roofed-s_115954392289325584.html) commemorates the incident: “On approximately this spot, Miles Archer, partner of Sam Spade, was done in by Brigid O’Shaughnessy.”

That’s all it says. No reference to _The Maltese Falcon_ or Dashiell Hammett.

On my first trip to S.F., I tracked down as many places mentioned in _The Maltese Falcon_ as I could, without the benefit of guide books, just using the text itself. This spot is virtually the only location in the entire novel that is unambiguously identified. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover the plaque, since I had no expectation of finding anything there.

[Burns & Allen](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_burns#Final_Years):

> [@Wikipedia](#):
>
> George Burns was such a well-respected individual that when he turned 90 in 1986, the city of Los Angeles renamed the northern end of Hamel Road ‘George Burns Road’[1] City regulations prohibited naming a city street after a living person, but an exception for Burns was made. In celebration of Burns’ 99th birthday in 1995, Los Angeles renamed the eastern end of Alden Drive ‘Gracie Allen Drive’. Burns was present at the unveiling ceremony where he quipped, “It’s good to be here at the corner of Burns & Allen. At my age, it’s good to be anywhere!”[2] ‘George Burns Road’ and ‘Gracie Allen Drive’ cross each other just a few blocks west of the Beverly Center mall.
