I’m sure I’m as vulnerable to bias as anyone. And from what I can tell, “twat” in this thread was not used by someone “on my side”. But I’m fine with calling it out – that word probably falls into a similar category of little tiny (but still real) misogynystic slurs that contribute to an overall misogynystic culture and society as “slut”, and should not be used as a slur against women. What was the other instance? ---

You missed the point- if a white kid dresses up in a suit, how would anyone know he’s supposed to be Obama, and not say… Paul Ryan or if he greyed his hair as part of the costume, Mitch McConnell? The point of a good costume is to capture whatever it is that would indicate that you’re dressed up as THAT particular person. If you’re going to dress up as Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones, you kind of need long blonde hair. And if you’re going to be President Obama, you kind of have to be black- it’s more or less what defines him visually (which is what costumes are about). And where do you draw the line on that kind of thing? Is a white kid allowed to be John Shaft for halloween and wear an afro wig and mustache? (and hopefully not be mistaken for Gene Shalit) By the same token, can a black kid wear a long blonde wig and be Legolas the elf? ---

Who dresses up as Obama for Halloween? Is this actually a thing? I mean, I know that there were a bunch of Fox News fans who were quaking at the knees that Obama was going to sell us out to the Taliban or ISIS or the Golden Horde or something and also steal all their guns and melt them down into chains to enslave all the white women, but he’s really not that terrifying to anyone with more that a tenuous grasp on reality. What happened to vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s monster? Also, there are 45 presidents now, and 44 of them are white, and some of them were actually not half-bad people and didn’t own slaves (well, Lincoln, Carter and Eisenhower, anyway…maybe Wilson and Roosevelt if you are willing to overlook certain attitudes and prejudices of the day). So having to put on blackface makeup to pretend to be a president is not really a thing. And really, if having to forego that one costume in the name of demonstrating some sensitivity to the history of minstrel shows is going to break America or ruin someone’s childhood, we must already be in pretty bad shape.
