No, that’s how you get. You know your only chance is if you can lull them into sanity again. If you gently keep them talking and try to wait out the adrenaline rush (or worse) they are high on, you might just stand a chance. After years of living with an abuser, you become this mechanical voice of reason machine in the face of the most horrible insults and threats. You don’t escalate and you don’t raise your voice, and you try to keep them talking without arguing per se. And you desperately hope that he’s not going to get in the car and come over because you just don’t think you can handle it and God help you you just might give in and blow him just to get some peace before the baby wakes up again.
