I would also like to note that the First Lady went from being a college student in a collapsed ex-communist country to being in the company of American billionaires just 3 years later… all during the massive E European human trafficking crises of the 1990s which saw thousands of girls being sold. (Hell, this problem was the entire driver of season 2 of _The Wire_). I just doubt that a 23yo ex-communist can so easily move around in heightened American society purely on innate grit and talent. Whore? Not in the legal sense. But definitely in the “that’s what my grandmother would have called her” sense. ---

Here’s the deal. I have noting but contempt for Milo Yiannopoulos. I think he’s scum. His dedication to spreading misery and scorn baffles and disgusts me. But I’m never going to call him a faggot. I’m never going to use that word to express my scorn. Not because he deserves better, but because that was the word the people who killed Mathew Shepherd and thousands like him used to justify what they did. Not just as a weapon to hurt, but as a reason it was okay to do what they did. It’s not okay to kill people. It’s okay to stomp faggots, because they aren’t people. “Whore” is the same. It’s a word used to justify assault, rape, and murder, and has been for centuries. Debating whether or not someone fits the “technical definition” of a whore is implicitly embracing the underlying connotation of the word: that there are women who aren’t really human and that violence against them is acceptable. THAT’S what a whore is. If someone wants to call themselves a whore (or a faggot), or uses the words in a jocular sense, I don’t really care. But when you use them to express anger and contempt, you are siding with a long tradition of dehumanization that has directly justified horrific violence. I don’t see how any amount of political activism could somehow justify that. And my current theory is that Melania Trump was throwing Trump’s words back in his face. I hope some day we know what the truth is. ---

Trump doesn’t have superpowers, and Barron is likely not a puppet but a normal boy with his own mind and own will; and he is about the age when this is really starting to show. But this is beside the point anyway. It is one of Melania’s continuous decisions to stay in her marriage. She could choose to reverse her earlier decision whenever she wants to. We all make decisions that have consequences. Some of them are hard, some make us face repercussions for years to come, or an entire lifetime. Sometimes we are surprised about those consequences, sometimes we know about them in advance - and we still choose to bear them because the choice is important enough for us. Melania is not a lesser being than all of us who manage to live with that simple reality of being responsible for ourselves. ---
