IMHO, there’s far too much overthinking going on here. Melania is a simple-minded twit whose mind – what there is of it – I couldn’t even begin to understand. She did, however, publicly oppose her husband’s deplorable stance on separating the children, which is consistent with her visiting them, presumably of her own volition. I think this is a good time to drag out my favorite piece of wisdom, because it’s so true and explains so much in so many different circumstances: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. I would suggest that the most plausible theory here is that Melania felt that the child-separation policy was terrible, but wore that stupid teenage raincoat with the puerile graffiti because she is a clueless twit. Occam’s razor, everyone – Occam’s razor! ---

I don’t give two shits about if the loves The Donald or not. Maybe she does. Maybe he wanted some arm candy and decided she would be a good rental for a while. Maybe she just wanted green cards for her family. Not that I care, but I don’t think she can stand the fucker now. What I do care is that you make a trip for the supposed purpose of showing that you care about the kids in concentration camps and you wear clothing with the message that you don’t care. Unless I hear a better excuse, I think she wore it to show contempt for those that her husband is harming. Inexcusable. ---

I’m honestly just agnostic on Melania Trump. I just don’t think we have enough information to say what her position is. I think it’s plausible that she’s basically trapped. It’s also plausible that she’s utterly complicit. I just don’t know and I don’t really care. Out of all the figures to hate in this horrific situation, she seems really far down the list. Ivanka has been more explicitly supportive of her father: she has a fucking office in the West Wing. She makes the morning show rounds. Her I see more as an unambiguous part of the administration. Tiffany Trump’s low profile has made it clear that adult children of Trump have the option to keep a low profile. ---
