Memorable Short Films

I loved this one. Partly, because it evokes the memories of my childhood in SoCal. I swear I know that street.

My addition: The Dove (or De Duva). Hilarious. I saw it when I went to see an Ingmar Bergman film, and this was an added bonus. It was even more hilarious seeing it in a theater where people were “catching on” at different times, and some never caught on at all. Helps if you’ve seen some of Bergman’s better known films.

FYI this vid has crappy synth music grafted on, and is not original.

I note comments are turned off. Wonder why.

The Silent Child won an Oscar in 2018. The ending still haunts me to this day.

I just hope you didn’t have any experiences like Deren’s character.

Good choice. I saw it on TV a long time ago. Maybe on Night Flight? I had some Bergman background by then. As I recall, the main point of reference was Wild Strawberries, but I think any of his films from that general period would give someone context for what the Dove people were doing.

Ha, no. Just the whole vibe of the visuals. Also, it was made 8 years before I was born.

One of the best shorts I ever saw was a version of Encounter at Farpoint, the pilot for ST:TOS. Someone had edited it sown and replaced the sound with an episode of Duck Dodgers of the 25 1/2 Century!!

They synced Picard to Daffy, Riker to Porky, and Marvin the Martian to Q. This was in the early 90s. I have looked for ever since there’s been an internet, but no results.

Thank you for this! At the 55 second mark, though, it becomes apparent that the title couldn’t be more wrong. Nobody but a friend would haul someone in a sit-ski up untracked pow! And we definitely need to see more sit-skiers shredding untracked pow. Also, nobody but a friend would pull the asshole move at the end! Gonna have to bookmark this to watch in November.

It also reminded me of this clip:

Rabbit Habit (1975), very unauthorized take on classic WB characters with drug references a-plenty:

Feast (2014), a lovely animated short from Disney Animation. It won an Oscar for Best Animated Short at the 87th Academy Awards. It’s just over 6 minutes long.

Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising (1963) is memorable not just for being simultaneously being sued by the Lutheran Church and The American Nazi Party or for triggering an obscenity conviction for a theater owner in California (overturned by the CA Supreme Court), but in my mind most importantly for spending half its $16,000 budget just to secure the usage rights to Bobby Vinton’s “Blue Velvet”. Worth. Every. Penny.

I liked INVASION of the BUNNY SNATCHERS (1992).

From the days of ONTV there was Hardware Wars, a Superman movie parody in the same vein (I’m looking for it online), Bambi Meets Godzilla and the very NSFW Lenny Bruce’s “Thank You Masked Man”

What’s Opera, Doc? (1957, U.S., dir. Chuck Jones)

Wallace & Gromit in A Close Shave (a.k.a. A Close Shave) (1995, U.K., dir. Nick Park)

And you can look at https://www.imdb.com/list/ls027875268/ to see what they list.

I think you meant ST:TNG.

My favorite short film, 12:01pm (1990). It was made before the film you will think of when watching it.

caligulathegod, there are many films that contain loops, as you can see in this Wikipedia entry:

List of films featuring time loops - Wikipedia

Sitnam, if you have a personal list of your favorite short films, you might consider putting that list on the Internet in some way. I suppose the easiest way is to create a watchlist on the IMDb of that list. I have never created such a list myself, so I can’t tell you exactly how to do this.

Skywhales (1983) is wonderfully weird. I first saw it at an art cinema.

If you’re into Bergman parodies, here’s one from the original SCTV series:
