I’m not sure why, but **Ignatz’s** link comes up blank for me. I will say though that _The Battle Hymm Of The Republic_ does always bring a tear to my eyes. ---

When I was a lad, my father used to take me to Civil War reenactments all the time. I remember an extra verse that goes roughly like this: I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel. “As you deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal, Let the hero born of woman crush the serpent with his heel.” [something or other] is marching on. But I don’t hear it when it’s sung nowadays. It’s a little more violent, I suppose, than the other verses, but it’s a martial song, right? Anyone know why it’s left out in most recitations of the song? ---

I’m not American (nor a Christian either for that matter) but that hymn is one of the most moving pieces of music I know. Every year, there is an inevitable Anzac Day thread, am I am always touched by the kindness shown by American dopers in them. It’s only fitting that I should try to repay that sentiment here and take a moment to remember the fallen US servicemen and women. Lest we forget. ---

(Now I am humming the Battle Hymn in my head.) By the beauty of the Lilly Christ was born across the sea with a grace in his bosom that transfigured you and me as He died to make men holy let us fight to make men free! Our God is marching on on! I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps they have builded an altar in the evening dews and damps I have read His righteous message by the dim and flaring lamps He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat He is shifting out the hearts of men before His judgement seat Oh be swift my soul to answer Him! Be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on! Damn good tune. ---

I’m thankful yet embarrassed that you chose to reference me. There are 4,000+ people that are far more deserving of your thoughts than I, not to mention those that fought in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam. They have my thoughts, always and forever. I haven’t lived up to their standards, though I hope one day I may. God bless the veterans and deceased veterans of this country, and of all countries for that matter. They are no less worthy of recognition.
