My father tried to teach me how to tie a tie, but I don’t think it ever really stuck. Lets see, how do I describe him? My father is one of the most morally upright people I know. He doesn’t show strong emotion, and is uncomfortable with it in others. He gets indignant very easily in the sight of what he considers injustice or incompetance. He’s punctual, and doesn’t understand lack of punctuality in others. He’s extremely stubborn, and he likes to argue. When I was growing up, he was the designated “ice cube maker”, and would always complain that nobody else ever made ice cubes.

I’m a lot like him in a lot of ways, I think, which is probably what caused us to butt heads so often growing up. It’s easier now, of course, but since neither of us are comfortable about physical contact or talking about feelings, our conversations are filled with silences.

An additional note about mine: his 100th birthday would be late next month, and I’ve been thinking about writing an essay to commemorate the occasion, which will also observe the (nearly) 200th anniversary of Abe Lincoln’s birthday, just one of the oddities I never noticed while he (my dad, that is) was alive. It’s not just arbitrary, but the theme I’m sticking to is the technological and other similaries each of them shared with the other and the disparities they share with people being born in 2009.
