So what, non-heterosexual males don’t constitute a representative sample? _bristles_ Anyway, two of my best friends dye their hair (one black, one bleach blonde). Another friend dyed his hair many wonderful colours before he chopped it all off… i was saddened. Incidentally, there’s a company called MAC Cosmetics which caters explicitly to males.

I’ve dyed my hair many times in the past. My natural color is dark brown, so I’ve gone both blonde and red.

\<ASIDE\> This thread reminds me of a line from a song by the Dambuilders (about a guy trying to hook up with a non-English-speaking girl at a club): “I could fall so easily, because her hair is colored red/I ask her if she’ll dye mine too; she tells me it’s already dead.”

> Never thought much about it. What I always find funny, though, is the “just for men” hair coloring you’ll see in drug stores. I guess a lot of guys feel more comfortable doing it if its labelled as such. I always thought it was rather silly to think that men’s hair and women’s hair was different enough to warrent separate coloring products.

> Well, I’m sure they’re the exact same product, and just a marketing gimmick.

Reminds me of this exchange from **The Boys in the Band** , a stage play first performed in 1968, and later a film:

Michael: I also got you something called “Control”. Notice, nowhere on the label is it called hair spray; just simply “Control”. And the words “For Men” are written about thirty-seven times all over the goddamn can!

Donald: It’s called Butch Assurance.

Michael: Well, it’s still hair spray, no matter if they call it “Balls”.

Matt McL: MAC doesn’t cater exclusively to males. They just have a rather extensive men’s line… MAC is very popular with television and movie make-up artists, and they’ve finally become more accessible to normal, midwestern folk like myself.

As to the somewhat off-topic topic, I’ve been dying my hair since I was in high school (or for close to ten years.) I’ve been every shade of drugstore red, dark brown once, and black three or four times.

Just yesterday, I got my hair cut SHORT. Shorter than I’ve ever had it, and all of what’s left is my natural, mousy, frumpy, light brown color.

The urge to dye it flaming, Coke-can red is powerful…my hands are shaking my blood is “itchy” my eyes are watering I just want to scream I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE I HAVE TO DYE MY HAIR PLEASE **GOD** HELP ME I’M BURNING UP!!!

Personally, (like any of you give a rats ass) I no longer color my hair. About once a year I have a friend or family member draw it back and cut it straight. I wash it but I don’t think or dick with it very much at all. On river trips it gets oily and grungy but it gets pulled back and I look just about the same as I always do.

I don’t wear much make-up ever because I am forever getting lipstick on my teeth when I bite my lips. Or I wipe my mouth and smear it half-way across my face. And mascara? Shit! I rub my eyes once and I’m raccoon face: Make-up is a pain in the ass. If men wish to subject themselves to this horror then I’m all for it. Try panty-hose too. Those suck just about as much IMHO.

Again, IMHO, what ever you want to do as long as it doesn’t involve children or animals, I’m pretty much all for it. If women can be vain about their hair and faces, so can men. But hey, that’s just me and my bag!
