Jesus fucking Christ. She plays the same 7 or 8 songs over, and over, and over, every day, every night. She’s 48 years old, and it’s all recent pop shit that you hear on teeny-bopper stations. I’m at my wits end with it. I think it’s a sign of mental instability, perhaps depression or worse. Even if I pulled out my favourite 7 or 8 songs of all time, I could \*“never, ever, ever” listen to them every goddamned spare minute for months in a row. \*See what I did there? Starships were meant to fly Whoop something something, Whoop something something Just call me maybe, blah blah blah I don’t know these songs, but it seems awfully immature and fucking weird for an adult to listen to them each, what 6? 8? 10? times a day, every day? When he caught hell from the big wigs for it, he locked himself in the broadcast booth and played Gordon Lightfoot’s Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald some 12-13 times, and a Moby Dick twice for good measure. He was a minor folk hero for a week or two… ---

I go through phases of wanting to listen to favorite songs over and over and over again. Right now I’ve got the most recent Mumford & Sons album on repeat in iTunes, actually. That said, I wear headphones so I don’t subject the rest of the household to it. And I’m not going through a divorce. Maybe you should get a pair of noise-canceling headphones and just start wearing them around the house. (I’m only half kidding.) ---

I’m trying to think what my top songs would be: in no particular order: Born to Run A Day in the Life We Gotta Get Outta This Place Highway Star Light My Fire Smoke on the Water Here Comes the Sun The medley from side 2 of Abbey Road Anyway, songs of that genre. But I couldn’t possibly listen to these songs every day, on a loop. There’s no way. You know who listens to the same 8 damned songs over and over? Teenagers. Not 48 year olds. Holy shit. ---

Diagnosis: stuck in high school. One of my friends in High school was like that, she ruined some great songs for me because by the time she was finished playing them over and over and over the sound of the opening notes made me homicidal. ---

On the back counter, the owner had a small radio/CD player and a little box with some CDs in it. Sometimes when she worked, she’d listen to one of her CDs, putting it on repeat so it wouldn’t just suddenly be silent after the first run through. One day we worked together and she put in some Neil Diamond hits CD (damn, did she love Neil Diamond), but she accidentally set the repeat to _track_ instead of album. I ended up keeping count of how many goddamned times she was gonna let “Solitary Man” repeat until she changed it. 34 times. Whoa, horrible flashback. She sounds like the lady who lived downstairs from me years ago. She blasted the same three or four Michael Jackson songs in a continuous loop, from 7 AM until 10 PM daily, for about two years. ---

It might be something to do with depressing or OCD. I struggle with depression and I need to listen to music whenever I’m “alone”. (riding the subway) Otherwise, music plays in my head and for some damned reason, my brain will put songs on repeat that I don’t like. (try to imagine that special hell) Sometimes when I get a new song, I will listen to it. A lot. Kind of hoping it makes it onto my brain playlist so maybe my brain will play something I like. Right now I’m sort of memorizing “The Village Green Preservation Society” by The Kinks. Oh wait! It’s after midnight and officially December so I can now listen to my Christmas music. Later ---

Maybe she’s just listening for nuances that aren’t apparent to you. Maybe she just really, really likes the tunes. Dude, it’s a quirk, a preference, not a sign of mental whatever.
