**David,** I am so sorry to hear you have cancer. Of course, the end must come for us all, the only difference is that you now have a clearer idea of what and when than most of us. I hope your remaining time, whether short or long, be as pleasant as possible. I will miss your contributions on aviation most of all - you lived through a time I know only through history books and the dwindling supply of eyewitnesses. Experience counts, and I will miss the perspective you bring. I confess to some selfishness - I still hope to see a few dozen more posts from you on such subjects. Alright, to be completely honest I’d like to see your words here for years more, decades more. \>sigh\< Post as often as you desire and feel able to do so, though if you can be out experiencing the real world and enjoying life that should be your first priority. The other day, I was talking about the SDMB with somebody. I realized I had been here a long time, and that there were people who had been posting here a long time. I realized that I knew these people not by what they looked like or how they dressed or what they smelled like, but by their words. Dr. King exhorted us to judge people “by the content of their character.” Well, as a writer, I believe nothing reveals the content of someone’s character like their words. **David** , I have known you for years by your words, and I must say that I have the highest respect for your character. Dangit, **Bosda**! I got through the hold thread with only a tear or two welling up, and then I read that and it was all over. _blows nose. twice_ **David Simmons** , thank you so much for what you’ve shared and taught me and everyone else here. I know we won’t - can’t - miss you like your wife and family will miss you, but we \*will \*miss you. OTOH, my grandfather lived 6 years with cancer after being given the 6 month notice from his doctor, so don’t think we’re letting you slide into the Great Beyond just yet! I expect you to keep on posting and fighting ignorance just as long as you feel up to it. 😛 ---

Well, I’m able to sit up the computer for a while at least. My nephew was here over the weekend and was doing my reading and writing for me bu he had to go home. I tipped him off to the Dope and asked him to get a guest membership and notify all when the time comes. Up to now I have had not pain whatever. We have Hospice people come in regularly. I’m told that they are pain specialists and that pain management has progressed greatly in the last few years. We’ll see I guess. I participated another of those strokes of genius. I was having a terrible time reading my moniter, a small flat-screen. My nephew was trying all sort of things to increase constrast and font size but nothing worked. Finally he leaned back and said, “Why not get a bigger monitor?” Thunder boomed, impressive theme music played and he went out and got a 24" flat-screed on sale, now I see fine. Got to go now. I’ll be back. ---

When I had my leg cut off and stapled back on, they gave me a button on my chest that injected morphine into the IV drip.
