Metal fans: Your top 5 contemporary metal albums?

Really like Volbeat. Was a big fan of Social D and Volbeat is basically Social D but just a hair heavier. His voice is very hard to imitate. Have to like hold my breath to kind of do it. Sounds like he doesn’t breath out of his nose. Hehe.

Roots is a good album. One of their better ones. After Derrick Coleman (I think that’s his name) took over it just wasn’t the same.

If you haven’t heard their 2 disc live album Under a Pale Grey Sky definitely check it out. It’s awesome and the production is top notch. It was right before Max rolled out.

They basically were over after Roots.

Igor Cavalera has also left now.

This is a very difficult question, btw
Baroness - The Blue Record

Oranssi Pazuzu - Valonielu

Jesu - Jesu

Rosetta – The Galilean Satellites

Neurosis – Honor Found In Decay

Figure this is as good a place as any for general discussion of this topic.

Couple of new albums have dropped in the last couple months I wanted to mention as I just heard them on Spotify.

In Flames has a new one. It’s getting torched in the reviews on Amazon for sounding like shit and after listening to it, I agree, it’s pretty shitty. The days of Colony are long behind them. I happen to really like Come Clarity (my fav) and the apparently much maligned Reroute to Remain. Playground had some good cuts on it too. The new one is not good on the first listen through.

Machine Head also has a new one out. Unto the Locusts was a MASSIVE surprise for me because it was completely fucking amazing and is probably my favorite MH album by far. They put out some stinkers before that IMHO so I was super stoked that Locusts was so good. The new one is also good, old fashion, badass metal. Old school MH, Sep, Slayer, etc… It seems pretty good on the first listen but I can already tell it won’t dethrone Locusts for me. Track 5 completely breaks the flow of this album though as it’s one of those REALLY long ambient tracks. It’s WAY too long for a mid-album stopper like that.

Anyone else heard these new albums and want to chime in with their thoughts?

I like some metal, like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Tool.

But to me, most modern metal is too fast and growly. I prefer it to be heavy not to be loud / fast.

Are there any of the bands mentioned here that fit this category? I sampled a few of the mentioned bands, and they didn’t really work for me.

Oh, and the best Shrinebuilder song is Blind For All To See

Tons of absolutely magical stuff has come out in the last decade. Picking just five albums is quite a challenge - but OK, here goes, in no particular order:

Teitanblood - Seven Chalices Of Vomit And Blood

دمار [i.e. “Damaar”] - Triumph Through Spears Of Sacrilege

Mortuus - De Contemplanda morte; De Reverencie Laboribus Ac Adorationis

The One - I, Master

Cornigr - Relics Of Inner War

Honourable mentions: Absurd - Blutgericht (so much better than the early stuff!); Funeral Mist - Maranatha; Kataxu - Hunger Of Elements; the Deathspell Omega debut; the first Burzum post-prison album; everything by Cultes Des Ghoules, Doombringer, Akitsa and Mefitic; recent cassettes by Maléfices and Chätiment and blah blah blah. I could go on a while, but probably shouldn’t.

Oh and hey Macca26, nice to see some Summoning love on the Dope! Never thought I’d see the day.

“Oath Bound” is great, “Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame” is fucking glorious, and the new one is wonderful as well.

There is a lot of excellent new or new-ish heavy / slow / pounding metal these days - in fact, that’s been a HUGE trend over the last five years or so. Guess you missed it? Check out Jex Thoth, The Devil’s Blood, Saturnalia Temple, Encoffination and maybe the Mortuus album mentioned in my top-five list, for starters.

We even had a thread about it.

Missed that one! Going through it real quick, I second Electric Wizard, Cough, YOB and some Sunn O))) (I’m not that big of a fan, but when they’re good, they’re really fucking good), among the bands from that thread.

Also gotta mention this goddamn monster of a song, by Finland’s Stabat Mater, from the Crushing The Holy Trinity compilation. Now that’s slooooooow.
