MI GOP leaders meeting with Trump

The correct acronym for Capybara is ROUS.

I’m pretty sure those don’t exist.

If American militias weren’t exclusively staffed by stupid people, this would be the sort of thing they’d show up at the state house for.

Exactly! Finally, they have a chance to defend freedom and democracy …and suddenly they have better things to do.

Give them time. The meeting to certify isn’t until 1 PM. They need to sleep off the hangover.

Does meth cause hangovers?

And the thing is, in the USA this was already done before and yes things were bad if you were one of the “wrong” people. A whole bloc of states functioned under overt illiberal democracy based on “populism” for the “right” people and everyoine else knowing their place, until the 1960s. The advocates of that policy back when called themselves “Southern Democrats”, then over the past three generations renamed themselves as “Values Conservatives” and now as MAGAs.

Hey now, most of them just abuse opiates. No need to paint with a broad brush.

An increasingly partisan conservative Court, including Roberts, has ruled in favor of voting restrictions, so this idea that the Constitution gives states power to curtail voting already has strong support in the Courts. It’s a question of where the Court decides the limits are. That is one reason why I am not 100% convinced that the Court would object to the idea that legislatures could single-handedly overturn an election.

Yes, it seems like an insane idea on the surface. Yes, it would seem to fly in the face of what the Court has ruled in the past. But you cannot rule the possibility out. Not with this court, you can’t.

Well, that and the fact US Code says a legislature can do that. You can of course make many legal counterarguments, but if the Republicans on the USSC have that law to hang a decision on, at least four of them will do exactly that.

That doesn’t make it either OK or inconsequential.

The entire structure of the USA depends on the country, including the losers, accepting the results of elections – allowing for recounts of genuinely close cases, and for investigations of genuine fraud, but accepting the results of those also. Those refusing to do so, and those in positions of power who are encouraging that refusal, are risking bringing the whole thing down. It is utterly reprehensible behavior, and it needs to be called out as such.

Yup.

They’re not going to pull it off this time; they didn’t have long enough to edge enough people, step by step, into seeing the unthinkable as normal. But what they can do is sow the seeds for another time. And ‘oh, it’s no big deal, it’s just an attempted coup by the POTUS’ is one of those seeds. Don’t spread it.

That line’s too fine to stand on. And it keeps moving further out.

That’s exactly how people wind up, bit by bit, supporting things they’d have been publicly disgusted by a few years previously.

And that’s the other thing that happens. Silence, against tyranny, breeds more silence. Because some are afraid to speak up, others become afraid to speak up.

Consider the impact that this has not only on the presidency, but on Congress. I think to pretend that more people won’t run under the QAnon (or whatever) banner is just naive - they absolutely will fly that flag. And like the Nazis, they will force people in the party to take a stand, to stand with them or get cut out of the party’s ecosystem - that means getting shoved aside when it comes to being part of the party going forward.

Imagine what working with a growing QAnon faction would be like. They will disrupt and do everything that they can to make Biden and Democrats appear ineffectual. They did this in both Obama’s and Clinton’s first two years - they are really, really good at this. And when they get a House and Senate majority, they could attempt to impeach Biden - as a way of getting even for the “hoax”.

Meanwhile, the economic situation is very likely to deteriorate in the short-term, which will put much of the country in a very sour mood. It’s precisely the kind of situation that favors an authoritarian takeover.

I love that the one fucker claims Trump didn’t urge them to “break the law” or “interfere w/ the election” - tho he declined to say what they DID discuss.
I’m sure Trump just wanted to discuss the newest season of The Crown w/ these 2 nobodies from bumblefuck!

Trump didn’t have to urge them or ask them to do anything: they walked in and volunteered their help.

You can watch the Michigan Canvassing Board meeting here, starting any minute: Michigan Board of State Canvassers - YouTube

If you’d like to watch the Board of Canvassers meeting live, here’s a link. Looks like they’re a little slow getting started.

It’s started. They’ll be voting any minute.

Minutes from October are approved. Onto the second item on the agenda: Certifying the results. Here we go.

Norm Shinkle is the one guy in the room not wearing a mask. What a douche.

Elections director, Jonathan Brater, could use some proper mask wearing tips as well.

Talking guy should push his mask up over his nose!
