Breaking news: A Dem has won the election for mayor of Miami for the first time in a couple decades. [Miami mayor race results: Dem Higgins beats Trump-backed González](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/12/09/miami-mayor-election-updates-results/87631398007/)

Nominally the election is non-partisan, but everyone knows who is who (and whom Trump endorsed).

That’s interesting that a (D) candidate hadn’t won in decades, considering the region’s MAGA-ification didn’t happen until fairly recently.

Isn’t the past domination by Republicans due to the Cuban exiles favoring Republicans for their past anti-Castro anti-socialist stances?

Yeah, pretty much. At a very simplistic level, the Cuban population down here (Miami is about an hour south of me) has voted Republican for a long time, and that led to the strength of the party in that region.
