I’ve been thinking about biting the bullet and getting this. I use Libre at home for some stuff I play with. It’s okay, but Office at work is just better - I know it seems minor, but the color-coded parenthesis for formulas is just such an advantage. But I am checking out this thread to see if any other products I’m unfamiliar with get mentioned.
Well, since you asked, Zoho Sheet is another good web app option: Online Spreadsheet Software | Create Spreadsheets for Free - Zoho Sheet
It’s from a smaller Indian company, but they’ve been around forever. I haven’t used it in a while but remember it being good, with an interface more similar to Microsoft’s.
I was going to say, it’s $70 a year for me.
Since I am a Mac household, I went ahead and switched to Apple Pages and Numbers. They are more limited programs, but they can do all the things I need. I do run into issues where there are capabilities I used to do in Excel that are either difficult or non-existent in Numbers. But those are few and far between. On net, the Apple programs work as well as Office for the moderate but not advanced user.
As you might imagine, there is a significant learning curve. LibreOffice is easier to learn for an experienced Office user. OTOH, have a multi-trillion $ company dedicated to providing a fully compatible alternative to Office is a plus. Apple pushes out updates and improvements every couple of months. That is nice.
I’ve been using LibreOffice for a while now and find it irritating that some of the extremely common shortcut commands in Office have different keystokes. After using Office for so many years, breaking old habits is hard for us old pharts.
Just saw an internet post allegedly from PCWorld offering lifetime access to the MS Office suite for one machine for $40. Can one of you wizards tell me if this is a legit offer or another phishing scam of some type?
TIA
PCWorld? Is it just an ad? It might be a remarketing ad, if you searched for Office recently.
There are many gray market ways to get a dubious copy of Office from less than reputable dealers. These are usually volume licenses resold against their original terms, but they’ve worked fine every single time I’ve bought one. $40 is a lot for such a license, though. I wouldn’t consider it legitimate, personally, but they are usually functional. My current grey market version has worked fine for many years, across many computers.
Changing TAB to ENTER in both LibreOffice and Google Sheets is one minor change that is the #1 reason I prefer to use Excel. There are other syntax changes which are used less often, but frustrating too. Setting up formulas is a bit more difficult. And the Charts look like they’re straight out of Windows 3.1, while editing properties is worse than Excel, and Excel isn’t very good at that.
Outlook isn’t spectacular but I haven’t found a good alternative besides web Outlook. Propsect Mail was nice but then stopped working and I can’t figure it out. Thunderbird apparently would cost money for my work email.
