Why do the Characters refer to their world as MIDDLE earth?

I’m at my girlfriend’s dorm in [middle earth](http://www.housing.uci.edu/ug/ME/mehome.html) as I type this. Not quite as majestic as LOTR’s M.E., but on the other hand, there aren’t thousands of Orcs marching on the exercise equipment of Helm’s Deep.

**Squeegee** nailed it. Middle Earth is Tolkien’s mythological version of Europe.
