# Might adopt another beagle

My older beagle died a week ago. I have to admit it makes things a little easier on me since I do all the work involved in animal care in our house. But since Quincy died Nord has been heartbreakingly depressed. She lays on the bed in the back bedroom by herself for hours. She goes into the backyard 20 times a day, maybe looking for Quincy.
I was looking at the Humane Society online and they have a 5 or 6 year old beagle. His name is Hunter which is my sons middle name. I know they put the headlights out on older dogs more quickly. But I worry whether she will accept him well. I am caught in the middle again. If my wife goes there today , she will get it. Then I have to make it work.

Fuck it. We can swing it. We love animals and older animals are notoriously hard to adopt out.

**Gonzo** , I’m so sorry for your loss, and especially that of Nord. Make sure that your wife explains the situation to the people at the shelter, so that you folks can take Hunter back if Nord doesn’t accept him. Don’t force him on her if she absolutely hates it.

Nord has always been a bitch around other dogs ,except for Quincy. But the last 2 days we have encountered a semi beagle in the park. She actually wagged her tail and exchanged sniffs. She got bored and went off squirrel hunting. We could not adopt a squirrel.

Please do, and post pictures. My Tilly is fascinated (read: hates) squirrels. Her entire outdoor existence is dedicated to squirrel eradication. The thought of bringing one into the house is, frankly, the greatest gift I could ever give her. It would be like the scene in _A Christmas Story_ with the wild pack of dogs running through Thanksgiving dinner.

Squirrels smell like doggie crack. Nordberg sits in the window when she sees one, she begins vibrating . Then she sneaks out . You can hear her nails clicking on the wood floor. When she goes after a squirrel she moves noiselessly. Sometimes she just stares at them for hours. Sitting in the yard waiting for one to make a mistake. When she chases one up a tree she stands with her front feet on the tree and bays loudly. Does she think that will cause it to come down?

Oh, Tilly’s part catahoula leopard hound - she actually tries to[CLIMB](http://dogbreeds.bulldoginformation.com/catahoula-leopard-dog.jpg) the tree once she chases a squirrel up there. I really wonder what she’d do once she caught it.

You may be able to take Nord to the shelter with you to meet Hunter to see if they get along.
We actually require that at our rescue, the current resident dog and potential new dog must meet and get along to our satisfaction for the adoption to take place.

I know some shelters work with you and will allow you to bring another dog along. I applaud you for opting to take an older dog because they are so much harder to adopt out.
What about a cat? They’re a lot easier to take care of, and while the dog and cat may not play like the two dogs did, they may provide each other company.
Sorry for your loss and just FYI, I have known three other beagles named “Quincy.” Why is that such a popular name for beagles?

The only silver lining in losing a pet is that it opens your home to take in another one. What a privilege it would be to give another dog a chance to live the life of Quincy.

Nordberg is a little rarer.
I have a cat. Of course he was being taken to the shelter and they asked me if I would take him. Boris and Quincy used to squabble a lot. Cat is declawed but likes to smack the dogs as the go by. Since it is like getting smacked by a powderpuff, Nord doesn’t care. Quincy would not allow it. He would go after him. It was exercise for both of them.
