Might be a mid-year crisis (June mini-rants thread)

No first-hand personal experience with that, but the ex-wife’s kids have had a couple of accidents where money-grubbing alleged “victims” saw potential monetary windfalls via frivolous personal injury lawsuits. She just handed the lawsuit threats over to the insurance company and in both cases, never heard anything about it again. The insurers really do have excellent carnivorous lawyers whose interests are the same as yours, and a friend of mine who used to be an insurance adjuster for major personal-injury claims before he retired tells me they also have private detectives to track down fraudsters, of whom there were many. So I wouldn’t worry. Your insurance company is liable for any lawsuit and they’re not going to pay a penny they don’t have to.

I get most of that crap deleted via my spam filter, but at one time I was getting persistent messages from an aggressive real estate agent. I used the “unsubscribe” feature that it offered (I had never subscribed in the first place, or even heard of the firm or person) but the spam emails continued. I finally sent the agent a direct email quoting the pertinent sections of the CASL (Canada Anti-Spam Law) and the civil and criminal penalties it provides for. Never got another email after that.

Thanks, you guys. I’m breathing a little easier.

Even the ferry from St Ignace to Mackinac Isl can be a white knuckle ride on a breezy day. To see the bow of a 60 ton ferry go up up up when meeting a wave is a little scary.

And Horse flies cannot be outsmarted by dunking under water, they’ll wait until you surface and land on your head to bite again. .

So I had a covid exposure at work. I don’t think the exposure should qualify as high risk but work injury does. So I’m self isolating and checking my temperature twice daily for the next week and half. Dammit. And the timing means I’m going to miss graduation for my residents too.

Can’t you get tested? I would, asap.

Can’t you get tested? I would, asap.

Mrs Magill is back down to her normal 97º this morning, so crisis averted (hopefully). She is still self isolating… as much as a mother of three boys can, that is.

No point unless I become symptomatic. Work injury won’t allow me back until 14 days post exposure. So a negative test wouldn’t let me go back to work sooner. And since I feel fine a positive test wouldn’t alter management either.

You might want to get tested just so you would know you had it (if you do) and could feel somewhat certain that you won’t get it again.

My step-nephew was tested after a co-worker got sick. He was positive. He never had any symptoms and has finally tested negative and gone back to work. He still takes precautions but says he is relieved that he feels a little safer now.

My cat had to be put to sleep on New Year’s Eve because of his severe intestinal problems, and I have really been eager to get a new kitten. Unfortunately, due to the shut down, the local shelter is keeping kittens in foster until someone indicates interest in adoption. I have tried with four different kittens, only to be told that they were on hold waiting for someone to come claim them. So I got an appointment today to see a kitten, and I went down to see him. But he wouldn’t let me pick him up, and hissed at me and tried to bite me and scratch me. My last cat never properly socialized, and was never a cuddler or even tolerated strangers. I don’t want another cat that won’t let me touch him. So I had to decline. Not really a rant, but more of a disappointment. I am very sad.

Not part of the rant, just a point of information: The shelter is very strict on masks and social distancing. You have to make an appointment, you have to wear a mask, and they ask you about your health and if you’ve visited any places still under full quarantine.

My TV died last night! What would normally be “shit, I have to go to Best Buy” is now “holy shit emergency!”. I live alone and only rarely leave the house, much less see actual people. I often leave the TV on just so I can hear human voices. And now I’ve got to buy a new one online. Not optimal but in a pandemic, and not willing to risk my life for a TV, I have no choice.

I was planning that when the time came, I would upgrade to at least a 50 inch (mine is 40). But I don’t think I can manage to wrangle one that big by myself. So I’m looking for another 40, not necessarily top-of-the-line, that I can get by with for a couple years until, hopefully, life will get back to normal. I’m not looking forward to this. I’m not the most technically adapt and everything now is a smart TV (mine is not) with all kinds of bells and whistles I’m not familiar with. Should be a challenge.

I’ve been getting stupid spam emails spoofed as being from “Amazon Prime” telling me that my membership is set to renew TODAY but the card associated with it is no longer valid so they’ve suspended my account and all orders unless I follow their helpful link to update my credit card information.

I thought it couldn’t possibly be a stupider scam, until I noticed that the actual email address it’s from is “trustmeee-support111@serviceeeee.com”

Rick Kitchen, never fear. There will be plenty of friendly, non-hissing, I need a cuddle and lap time, kittehs waiting for you. And when you do find one, you know pictures are mandatory!

I am quite aware of that rule.

If you live in Washington state, then Homeward Pals has two lovely kitties for adoption currently named Twix and Zuko. They’re a bonded pair who have been fostered by Foster Dad John of The Critter Room and are apparently very loving but require a home where they’re the only kitties. They are reported to be very human loving and are highly energetic. Both boys, one’s a black & white tuxie, the other is a tabby.

June has been a real shit month so far:

My cat died, he was 19, and was a real good egg of a cat.

I interviewed for my boss’s job… and didn’t get it. Not exactly surprised but it’s a disappointment.

Found out someone stole my new kayak from storage. Cut the lock and just carted it away.

My son discovered he could buy Fortnite stuff with my credit card, to the tune of enough money to buy a new (entry level) kayak.

And today… my mom is sick. We don’t know how bad, but she’s in her late '70s, smoked for maybe 30 years, back when it was chic, and hasn’t been in the best of health lately. So an unscheduled trip to the hospital after tests is not what you want to hear.
I just feel myself buzzing with the stress of it all, and everyone else in the house is just as miserable as me.

Jeez, Cheesesteak, I think you “won”. I’m very sorry, especially about the kitty.
How old is your son?

dupe

Thanks.

Kid Cheesesteak is 26.

Kidding! he’s not quite 12. He knows better, knows he really crossed a line, but goddamn is he captivated by in app purchases in these games. AFAICT, this was one afternoon’s worth of terrible decision making. I think my wife and I were heroically even keeled about the whole thing, but he was beyond miserable, and deservedly so.

He sulks every time I put a parental control on something and I tell him “it’s to protect YOU, not me” this time he went around the controls and made a mess of it.

You scared me! :stuck_out_tongue:
I did something similar when I was a teenager. And my son did something similar to me. Rotten little turd.
